James Vick (5-0, 1-0 UFC) vs. Valmir Lazaro (12-2, 0-0 UFC)

The Matchup: Although this matchup offers little in the way of name value, it nevertheless projects as an intriguing barnburner. Both Vick and Lazaro are talented strikers with boatloads of potential.

Vick, who advanced to the semifinals of “The Ultimate Fighter 15,” is a talented boxer with an improving assortment of kicks and knees. Exceptionally light on his feet for such a big man -- he is a sturdy 6-foot-3 -- he tosses out a sharp jab made more dangerous by his freakish height and throws beautiful two- to four-punch combinations that work the head and body together in a smooth, high-volume rhythm. Although he offers little as an offensive wrestler and depends on his length and constant striking output to keep his opponents at range, Vick compensates with solid submissions in transitions, slick counter knees as his opponent changes levels and just enough takedown defense to keep the fight standing.

Like Vick, Lazaro is a striker by trade. The Nova Uniao product can fight proficiently out of either stance, and he specializes in gorgeous head movement and counter combinations in the pocket punctuated by vicious kicks at all levels that play off the threat of his quick, powerful hands. His wrestling and ground games are largely a mystery, though there is reason to think he is somewhere between average and proficient.

Betting Odds: Vick (-150), Lazaro (+130)

The Pick: Given the lack of track record for both fighters at the highest level of competition, this is a difficult fight to predict. With that said, it seems likely to be a striking match, and that makes it a battle between Vick’s aggressive, high-output stylings and Lazaro’s slick counter work. Vick’s length should give him a substantial advantage in that kind of fight, enough to make up for the fact that Lazaro is a bit more polished and complete as a striker. Vick wins via close decision.
