Aaron Rosa vs. Joey Beltran

The Matchup: You have to love “The Mexicutioner,” because Beltran always gives a strong effort, even when he is obviously being brought in as the obvious B side. Whether it is spoiling Rolles Gracie’s UFC debut with some down-and-dirty scrapping, outpointing Tim Hague or taking more gifted guys like Matt Mitrione and Patrick Barry the distance, Beltran leaves it all in the cage.

Rosa has had mixed results at the higher levels of the sport, showing some flashes of athleticism but with gaps in his game. He has some solid grappling and jiu-jitsu going for him, but defensive lapses have cost him, and, at times, he seems an unfinished product.

Beltran’s a solid test for Rosa, who will be about 25 pounds heavier. Rosa’s task is simple: apply his wrestling and jiu-jitsu advantages while denying Beltran ranges where he can operate, specifically in the clinch and in standup exchanges. Rosa has a fair upside, and this is his chance to showcase it. However, it is also a great opportunity for Beltran to send a young prospect packing.

The Pick: Look for some rough spots early as Rosa takes some shots but eventually gets the fight to the ground, picking his spots and riding Beltran to a decision win.
