Bellator: Good vs. De la Cruz final
Lyman Good will meet Omar de la Cruz in the final of Bellator Fighting Championships' welterweight tournament, after both picked up wins on May 15 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Ill.
Tournament favorite Good, a 23-year-old Tiger Schulmann product,
defeated Jorge Ortiz,
a Juarez, Mexico native who trains in San Diego and works as an
attorney, to qualify for the finals. Good mostly held Ortiz down
with top control until he could muster up with a second-round
flurry that opened a nasty, fight-ending cut above Ortiz's right
eye.
De la Cruz, a native of the Dominican Republic, pulled a big upset over Dave Menne, dropping the former UFC champion twice in the first round, then using his long arms to rain down punches while standing on a grounded Menne. Menne was on the move, but clearly dazed when the referee stepped in. De la Cruz, a Tae Kwon Do stylist, said he doesn't have a cage to train in in his native country, so he linked up with UFC standout Brandon Vera stateside. Vera cornered him in the fight.
The welterweight final takes place June 5 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Ct. Bellator, which airs its cards on one-day tape delay on ESPN Deportes, does not have an event May 22. Instead, it will air a highlight show. The promotion was planning on venturing to Montreal on May 29, but a reported hold-up over the dimensions of Bellator's cage forced the show to be moved to Monroe, La.
The May 15 card also featured the pro MMA debut of Kerry Vera, wife of UFC light heavyweight Brandon Vera. Vera took a sound unanimous decision over a smiley Leslie Smith, who fights out of Colorado. Vera used her formidable muay Thai to beat Smith to the punch and land several powerful combinations. The promotion will put two women in the cage again on their June 19 card in Hollywood, Fla., when Jessica Aguilar meets Rosi Sexton at 120 pounds.
