The Weekly Wrap: April 4 - April 10

Odds and Ends

Billy Evangelista will
headline May 15's ShoMMA.
Odds and Ends

• A week before its premiere card on Showtime, Strikeforce announced it will resurrect the lower-profile ShoMMA series on May 15 in Fresno, Calif. The series, designed to highlight up-and-coming fighters in the vein of Showtime’s ShoBox events, was known as ShoXC under Pro Elite ownership. Billy Evangelista will headline the first show against Mike Aina, the Hawaiian who gave headliner Nick Diaz a run for his money on a Showtime card in 2007. Kim Couture will take on Meisha Tate, MMAWeekly.com reported. Tate will carry a four-fight winning streak into the event, which will air at 11 p.m. ET on Showtime. In other Strikeforce news, the promotion announced that its April 11 event, headlined by Frank Shamrock vs. Diaz, will be available as an Internet pay-per-view for $24.95.

• The California State Athletic Commission has finalized several significant changes to its policies. The commission, like Nevada’s, is now able to declare a fight a no decision if the winner is suspended for a positive drug test. The option was most recently exercised when Karo Parisyan had his UFC 94 victory over Dong Hyun Kim overturned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after a positive test for painkillers. In other changes, a fighter who has tested positive for drugs must now test clean before having his or her license renewed or reinstated. Additionally, amateur and professional boxing matches can now be held in the same five-roped ring as MMA fights in the Golden State.
