Notable Matchmaking
• A future contender for the UFC middleweight title will likely be decided when Nate Marquardt and Demian Maia clash at UFC 102 on Aug. 29 in Portland, Ore. Maia announced the bout on his Web site.
• A middleweight clash between Jim Miller
and Chael Sonnen
has been penciled in for UFC 98 on May 23 in Las Vegas. Miller was
set to face second-ranked Yushin
Okami, but the Japanese stalwart pulled out of the fight due to
injury. Another new bout on the upcoming card was added, as
Xavier
Foupa-Pokam -- who lost to Dennis Kang at UFC 97 -- will face
Drew
McFedries. Foupa-Pokam replaces an injured James
Irvin.
• A bantamweight bout between Jeff Curran and Takeya Mizugaki appears set for WEC 42 in August. MMAWeekly.com reported that both fighters have verbally agreed to face each other.
• Joachim Hansen will defend the Dream lightweight title he won last summer for the first time at Dream 10 and will meet the man he defeated to claim the belt, Shinya Aoki. The news comes from a Nightmare of Battle report, which cited comments from Dream officials. The victor will then defend on New Year’s Eve against the winner of a fight between Gesias Cavalcante and Tatsuya Kawajiri, set for Dream 9 on May 26. Dream 10 is set for July 20 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
• Gleison Tibau will face Melvin Guillard at “The Ultimate Fighter 9” Finale on June 20 in Las Vegas, according to MMAJunkie.com. Guillard was originally booked to face Thiago Tavares, who pulled out of the fight.
