Sherdog’s Top 10: Regional Fight Cards of All-Time
No. 7
7. Shidokan Jitsu “Warriors War 1”
Feb. 8, 2001 | Kuwait City, Kuwait
Kuwait is not exactly known as a hotbed of MMA, but in February 2001, it became one. Shidokan Jitsu’s “Warriors War 1” was a same-day tournament featuring some of the toughest men on the planet. Dave Menne won the competition across 30 minutes of combat, beating Karimula Barkalaev, Shamir Maromegob and Carlos Newton en route to the title.
What sticks out is the list of fighters at the event who did not reach the final to face Menne. It includes Jose Landi-Jones and future UFC hall of famer Matt Hughes. They fought one another in the tournament quarterfinals, where the Brazilian struck down Hughes with a knee 4:45 into the first round.
