7. “Redbelt” (2008)

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Mehmet, “Redbelt” tells the story of Mike Terry (Chewitel Ejiofor), a jiu-jitsu instructor who has forsaken prizefighting in favor of running a self-defense academy. However, he struggles to keep the lights on -- until fate intercedes. An accident sets off a chain of events that prompts Terry to step into the ring to pay his mounting debts. Former two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder Randy Couture, onetime Shooto champion Enson Inoue and longtime UFC announcer Mike Goldberg all appear in the 100-minute film. Though critics greeted “Redbelt” favorably, it flopped to the tune of $2.7 million at the box office.
