Sherdog’s Top 10: Head Kick Knockouts
No. 7
7. Pete Williams vs. Mark Coleman
UFC 17
May 15, 1998 | Mobile, Ala.
Coleman was still one of the scariest guys in the UFC when Williams figuratively kicked in his teeth at the Mobile Civic Center, but he eventually found his career in a terrible downward spiral. That is what made his winning the 2000 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix so remarkable, as he he had been left at the curb by the small fanbase that followed MMA at the time. The fight with Williams essentially started his aforementioned spiral, and it supplied the sports with one of its signature highlights from the early days of the UFC.
Williams took everything “The Hammer” gave to him and returned the favor. Coleman gassed some 12 minutes into the fight, but “El Duro” seemed as fresh as ever. Coleman missed a few swatting left hooks between gasps, and when he hunched over due to exhaustion, Williams found some nice property for his shin to rent. The former UFC heavyweight champion instantly crumbled to the mat, resulting in a shocking end to the fight.
