Carwin Out of UFC 125 Bout

The UFC lost its co-main event for UFC 125 on Jan. 1, as Shane Carwin announced he was pulling out of his scheduled fight against Roy Nelson due to a back injury that will shelve him indefinitely.

Carwin will undergo surgery for a back injury that has nagged him since his days as a prospect for the National Football League. Carwin’s manager told MMA Fanhouse that the heavyweight has been using rehab and painkillers to get through the injuries in training camp, but opted for a long-term solution instead of another training camp with the complications.

Carwin, who most recently lost to Brock Lesnar on July 3, will go under the knife on Nov. 2. There is no timetable for his return.

Nelson will not get another opponent and was scratched from the show. This despite pushing himself earlier than a doctor recommended through knee injury rehab, Nelson told Sherdog.com.

UFC 125 will be headlined by Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard.
