Upcoming UFC, Affliction bouts shaken
up
One of the top bouts on Affliction's sophomore pay-per-view effort was rearranged this week, as Vitor Belfort will replace Renato "Babalu" Sobral against Matt Lindland in a middleweight fight on the "Day of Reckoning" card set for Jan. 24. Affliction decided to go with Belfort, a natural middleweight, rather than try a to figure out a catch weight in matching Sobral and Lindland, Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio told FOX Sport’s Fight Game. Sobral is still expected to fight on the card against an opponent to be decided.
Also added to the Affliction card this week was a heavyweight fight of questionable purpose between Josh Barnett and Gilbert Yvel. Atencio framed the fight as “good versus evil” on the Fox Sports interview, citing Yvel’s reputation for bending the rules in his MMA career.
The UFC also saw one of its upcoming cards disrupted this week, and confirmed a few upcoming bouts. Frankie Edgar pulled out of his fight against Matt Wiman on Wednesday's "Fight for the Troops" event on Spike TV due to injury. There were rumors Edgar will be replaced by Jim Miller, who just debuted in the UFC on Oct. 18 with a submission win over David Baron. No replacement bout is listed on the UFC’s Web site, but the UFC did confirm that Denis Kang will debut against Alan Belcher on Jan. 17 and Stephan Bonnar returns against Jim Jones on Jan. 31.
