Sherdog’s Top 10: Gruesome Head Injuries
Number 8
K-1 “Dynamite!! Power of Courage 2010”
Dec. 31, 2010 | Saitama, Japan
This fight made the cut due to a partially detached ear. Yes, you read that correctly.
Sakuraba’s ear opened up about 60 seconds into the tilt, which led to Zaromskis targeting the wound and eventually earning a referee stoppage. With flesh dangling by a thread, the ear was completely torn off when “The Gracie Hunter” shot in for a takedown on “The Whitemare.” Referee Moritaka Oshiro stopped the bout twice to allow Sakuraba to be cleaned up, but the ringside physician mercifully stepped in and would not allow the Japanese legend to continue. After the bout, Sakuraba offered no excuses.
“Sorry,” he said, “but my ear kind of came off, damn it.”
