Sherdog’s Top 10: Disastrous Title Shots
No. 8
8. Jan Finney vs. Cristiane Justino
Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Werdum”
June 26, 2010 | San Jose, Calif.
Justino was not known quite as well then as she is now, but she was still regarded as a juggernaut in women’s MMA when she put the Strikeforce title on the line against Finney; and the Brazilian had already pummeled America’s sweetheart, Gina Carano, and torn through Marloes Coenen. Finney was not expected to do well against “Cyborg,” and by the time it was over, most people questioned why it ever happened in the first place.
“Cyborg” bludgeoned Finney from the start and eventually forced a stoppage when referee Kim Winslow finally decided to stop the mugging in the second round. Finney was bloodied, bruised and hurt, and it was obvious she never had any chance of winning. The fight was so one-sided that she turtled in round two and threw a desperation right hand that missed Justino by several feet and landed on the canvas. According to FightMetric data, “Cyborg” out-landed Finney 89-16 in the significant-strike department and connected on 127 total strikes in 7:56.
