UFC 49 Prelims: Parisyan and Diaz Go Distance, Edwards Stuns Thomson
Chris Lytle vs Ronald Jhun
Josh Gross Aug 21, 2004
With the Diaz-Parisyan and Thomson-Edwards bouts garnering so much
attention -- despite their placement in the preliminaries --
welterweights Chris Lytle
and Ron Jhun, a veteran fighter making his UFC debut, were lost in
the shuffle.
Lytle, a three-time UFC veteran, entered the card on late notice as several of Jhun's opponents were bumped following training injuries. It was the man with UFC experience who scored early, landing a straight right that dropped the Hawaiian-born-and-bred Jhun to the canvas. Lytle followed him to the ground, where he proceeded to ground-and-pound from the guard, half-guard and side control.
As action began in round two, Jhun moved to reverse fortunes by pushing Lytle into the fence to set up a double-leg takedown. However, Lytle changed his level and met Jhun at the point of attack. The Indianapolis-native entangled an arm around Jhun's tattooed neck.
The 170-pounders jockeyed for leverage. Lytle (29-10-4) hung on as Jhun (26-12-2) searched for relief, but it was unavailable to him. From the guard, Lytle tapped out Jhun 1:17 of round two.
