Condit to headline for UFC

The UFC announced this week that WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit will not only be moving to the UFC ranks, but will be headlining a live event on Spike TV.

Condit, Sherdog.com's No. 8 ranked welterweight, will face Martin Kampmann in the main event of an UFC Fight Night card on April 1 from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tenn. The event will be the UFC's debut in Tennessee. The first regulated pro MMA card in the state, from the XFC promotion, will take place Feb. 20 in Knoxville. The Tennessee state legislature approved regulations for the sport last year.

UFC Fight Night 18 is expected to serve as a lead-in to the premiere episode of season nine of “The Ultimate Fighter.” The card will feature TUF 8 winners Efrain Escudero and Ryan Bader, and alumni Cole Miller and Junie Browning. In addition, Condit's last scheduled opponent in the WEC, Brock Larson, is expected to fight Jesse Sanders on the show. These moves signal the end of the WEC welterweight division. The organization announced this week it is adding a flyweight (125-pound) division. The elimination of the welterweight class comes a little more than a month after WEC scrapped its light heavyweight class. One of its former 205-pound champions, Brian Stann, is set to make his UFC debut against Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 97 in April.
