Mayorga to Fight MMA

The upstart Shine Fights promotion announced that it will hold a pay-per-view event on May 15, headlined by the MMA debut of former prominent boxer Ricardo Mayorga. The 36-year-old former WBC champion has tangled with the likes of Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley, Felix Trinidad and Fernando Vargas.

Mayorga has signed to fight UFC veteran Din Thomas, who made waves in 2007 when he called out boxers following his UFC 71 win over Jeremy Stephens. The bout makes Mayorga, who last boxed in September 2008, one of the most accomplished boxers to try his hand at MMA in North America.

Shine Fights is calling its third card “Worlds Collide.” The event will emanate from Fayetteville, N.C. The promotion has promoted two events, one in Ohio and one in Florida, the latter of which was offered as an Internet pay-per-view.

While not yet officially announced by the promotion, MMAJunkie.com reported that the May 15 card will also feature Murilo "Ninja" Rua vs. Falaniko Vitale, Eduardo Pamplona vs. Nick Thompson, Braulio Estima vs. Rick Hawn and Alexandre Ferreira vs. Jamal Patterson.
