The blinding speed for which Belfort has always been known made an appearance against Martin, and the results were predictable. “The Phenom” cut down Martin with a right uppercut-straight left combination in the second round of their middleweight confrontation at the Honda Center. Belfort closed the deal 3:12 into Round 2, as he continued to shovel dirt onto the idea that his best days were behind him. Martin spent the first round eating effective counters from the uncharacteristically patient Brazilian, who supplemented his offense with a punishing jab and knees from the clinch. Midway through the middle stanza, Belfort escaped to his feet after being taken down and separated, creating the space necessary to do fight-ending damage. He buckled Martin’s knees with a flying knee, fought through a desperate single-leg takedown attempt and uncorked the two-punch combination that drew the curtain.
