Jose Luis Castillo walked into the ring on April 20, 2002 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas dead set on preventing Mayweather from becoming a two-division champion. He was unsuccessful, as Mayweather took a unanimous decision that brought with it The Ring, WBC and lineal lightweight titles. Scores were 115-111, 115-111 and 116-111, all for Mayweather. While close in nature, the victory moved the Grand Rapids, Michigan, native to 28-0 and allowed him to add to a growing collection of hardware that already included the WBC super featherweight crown. A little less than eight months later, Mayweather successfully defended his lightweight titles in a rematch with Castillo, this time at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. There, he was awarded another close unanimous decision after 12 rounds: 115-113, 115-113 and 116-113.
