Ortiz went 6-3 in UFC title fights, with victories over Wanderlei Silva, Yuki Kondo, Evan Tanner, Elvis Sinosic, Vladimir Matyushenko and Ken Shamrock. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” captured the vacant light heavyweight crown with his five-round unanimous decision over Silva at UFC 25 on April 14, 2000 and did not relinquish it until he was spanked -- literally and figuratively -- by Randy Couture at UFC 44 on Sept. 26, 2003. Ortiz’s successful title defense against Tanner was particularly brutal, as he knocked the Texan unconscious with a thudding slam 30 seconds into the first round.
