10. Palhares’ Mid-Fight Celebration
UFC 134 “Silva vs. Okami”
Aug. 27, 2011 | Rio de Janeiro

It is somehow fitting that multiple-time offender and current World Series of Fighting welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares kicks off this list. He has been penalized multiple times for holding submissions too long or otherwise disobeying referee instructions and has another strike against him for a positive test for testosterone; and his mid-fight protestation that Nate Marquardt was greasing got him knocked out shortly thereafter.

The granddaddy of all Palhares brain farts, however, came when he fought Dan Miller. “Toquinho” ate up Miller over the course of a strong first round, peppering him with kicks from the outside before dropping him with a front kick and slamming him to the mat. Miller recovered and fought on, but Palhares landed a flush high kick with around 35 seconds left in the round. The Brazilian followed him to the mat and pummeled the seemingly helpless Miller with punches before he turned away to climb the fence and begin his well-deserved celebration.

The only problem was that while Palhares was screaming at the fired-up crowd from atop the fence, Miller was not done and referee Herb Dean had yet to stop the fight. It was bizarre, fantastic and an excellent summation of Palhares’ career as a whole.
