UFC 43 “Meltdown”
June 6, 2003 | Las Vegas
The UFC’s original phenom, Belfort, has been around practically since the birth of the sport. There have been so many incarnations of Belfort that it is impossible to track whether today’s version is “new Vitor” or “old Vitor.”
At any rate, UFC 43 was Belfort’s attempt to get back on the wagon after an underwhelming run in Pride and a convincing decision loss to Chuck Liddell. The UFC brought in Eastman, future victim of Quinton Jackson’s promise of “black-on-black crime,” to face the soon-to-be-resurgent prince.
Nothing much happened for the first minute, until Eastman made an ill-advised try at shooting for a takedown. Belfort easily stuffed the attempt, grabbed the double-collar tie and loosed two brutal knees that put Eastman on his back. The patented Belfort flurry of punches followed, and the fight was over in 67 seconds.
What went unnoticed in the insane finishing flurry was the long, deep cut in Eastman’s forehead that ran for at least three inches across his forehead. Belfort hit Eastman so hard and so fast that one of the gnarliest cuts we have ever seen had barely even begun to bleed by the time the fight was over.
