Sherdog’s Top 10: Floyd Mayweather’s Greatest Hits

No. 1

1. Fab Five

Oscar De La Hoya stood between Mayweather and history on May 5, 2007 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The two Olympians went at it for 12 rounds, as Mayweather eked out a split decision and laid claim to the WBC super welterweight crown. Scores were 116-112 and 115-113 for Mayweather, 115-113 for De La Hoya. With the win, Mayweather joined De La Hoya, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard as the only fighters to win world championships in five weight classes. Manny Pacquiao joined the exclusive group a little more than a year later. Though there was talk of a rematch, Mayweather-De La Hoya 2 never came to fruition. De La Hoya went on to defeat Steve Forbes by unanimous decision before falling to Pacquiao by eighth-round TKO on Dec. 6, 2008. Four months later, he announced his retirement.

Sherdog’s Top 10 series is voted upon by a panel of Sherdog.com staff members and contributors: Jordan Breen, Tristen Critchfield, Mike Fridley, Brian Knapp, TJ De Santis, Mike Sloan, Eric Stinton, Jesse Denis, Joshua Ramsey, Joseph Santoliquito, Andreas Hale, Josh Stillman and Anthony Walker.
