Sherdog’s Top 10: Pride Fights

No. 1

1. Wanderlei Silva vs. Quinton Jackson
Pride 28
Oct. 31, 2004 | Saitama, Japan

Silva had stopped the American powerhouse with knees a year earlier in one of the best scraps of 2003, and fight fans waited with baited breath and foaming mouths for the rematch. The two 205-pounders did not disappoint, as they picked up where they left off and tried killing each other for 13-plus minutes. In the end, Silva was in better shape, landed the cleaner strikes and wore out Jackson before kneeing him to a pulp in the second round.

Jackson was battered and gasping for air when he walked into a flailing right hook in round two. The punch buckled his knees, as Silva went in for the kill and trapped him in a Thai clinch. “The Axe Murderer” doled out five straight knees, and though Jackson did well to block them, the sixth one got through. “Rampage” was knocked out instantly and fell face-first onto the ropes, where he bounced up and down. It was a gruesome scene, and even though the two fought again in the UFC, the finish brought a decisive close to one of Pride’s fiercest rivalries.
