Sherdog’s Top 10: Lightweights of All-Time

No. 2

2. Frankie Edgar

The consummate underdog in many respects, Edgar has excelled in multiple weight classes while carving out a resume worthy of hall-of-fame consideration. “The Answer” brought the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight crown back to Toms River, New Jersey, when he upset the legendary B.J. Penn and took a five-round unanimous decision from the popular Hawaiian at UFC 112 on April 10, 2010. Edgar then tightened his grip on the 155-pound throne by outclassing Penn more decisively in their UFC 118 rematch a little less than five months later. He successfully defended the belt in two subsequent meetings with Gray Maynard -- the first a dramatic five-round draw, the second a fourth-round knockout -- before being dethroned by Benson Henderson in February 2012. Edgar left the lightweight division behind and downshifted to 145 pounds after Henderson turned him away in their UFC 150 rematch. He has gone 6-2 since -- only Jose Aldo has beaten him -- but has yet to summit the featherweight mountain.
