J.G.’s “It’s Sherdog.com Not Sherdog.net” Mailbag

It's Sherdog.com

Boy did I make some of you angry. Know what that means? It’s mailbag time.

Returning from a long hiatus hunting snow geese in South Dakota, the mailbag covers questions and comments ranging from the consequences of Pay-Per-View spoilers, meanings of pound-for-pound rankings (spiritual and practical), and thoughts on B.J. Penn (Pictures).

Another brutal Snow Geese hunting season is in the books. On to business. …

A Little Control Goes A Long Way

I write to you regarding the spoiler poll posted after Bushido 10 ended in Japan. Given that a large part of your membership lives in North America it seems seriously rude to post a spoiler poll on your home page before anyone on this continent can see the fights. If not what is the spoiler forum for? I didn’t even mean to browse the site, just landed momentarily on the site, but long enough to see that Gomi was going to get choked out. Over a day later now I finished watching the PPV and it definitely sullied the event to know the results. PLEASE BE MORE CONSIDERATE! Thank you. — Anonymous

I’m a little frustrated right now. I understand you have an obligation to report the news of MMA and I generally love your site! However, today when I pulled up the main page, I saw the headlines regarding the PRIDE Bushido show. Now, this is frustrating to me because the show hasn’t even premiered in the U.S. I just think it would be nice if you could put something out there that says `PRIDE Spoiler` or something to that effect, rather than the huge headline you put out there today. Thanks for your time. — Eric Bodelson

I think that it is harmful if you post event results before the USA PPV broadcasts, considering this is mainly an American site. Maybe PRIDE DSE has been cool in the past, but with the recent crackdown the American counterpart of PRIDE may look for damages or something if they believe Sherdog spoilers news are taking away from possible PPV purchases. A bunch of threads were started already saying that they won t buy the PPV due to knowing the main event already...plus some other reasons. Just warning in case — Dan

Thanks for the concern Dan.

Sorry, don’t buy into “spoilers.” News is news. Anyone that saw Bushido results on Sherdog.com should have known better. There are plenty of mixed martial arts fans either unable or unwilling to get the PPV. For those people, I’m sure the results were welcomed.

Now, news headlines are shown on the forums and some of you had the Gomi-Aurelio fight ruined that way. Although I have nothing to do with Sherdog.net, I apologize. We’ll do our best to fix that for the future.

As far as us impacting PRIDE’s Pay-Per-Sales, I’d guess running against the NCAA tourney finals probably dented PPV buys a bit more than results on the site.

If DSE realized that MMA fans are more sports than pro-wrestling fans, they wouldn’t have had a problem scheduling the broadcast on Sunday — the same day as Wrestlemania.

As it was, I decided to watch basketball and, unfortunately, saw UCLA lay an egg against Florida. At least Westwood wasn’t torched — lots of movies to look forward to this summer.

God Bless TUF Fans

Just finished reading your piece, "J.G.’s Dirty Dozen: A Pound-for-Pound MMA Ranking.” I really enjoyed reading it. I primarily only watch UFC on the Spike channel so I know my fight experience is extremely limited. I was amazed by your statement: "Questions continue to linger about a Fedor-Andrei Arlovski (Pictures) contest. At this point I don’t see anything that prevents Fedor from dominating that bout. He is the best fighter in the world." WOW!!! What makes you think Fedor would "dominate" Arlovski? I don't see anyone that can beat Arlovski, at least not in the UFC. Any insight you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I will definitely buy some PRIDE DVD’s so I can watch Fedor in action. Thanks again for a very enjoyable article. Sincerely — Mark Becken

Mark, you’re missing a whole, wide world out there. Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) is hands down the best heavyweight mixed martial artist on earth. I, along with a lot of others, also happen to think he’s the best overall fighter today — and perhaps of all time.

Fights you have to watch: Fedor vs. Mirko Filipovic (Pictures); Fedor vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Pictures) I; Fedor vs. Kevin Randleman (Pictures). (I believe the last two are out on DVD.)

Things to look out for during each fight:

Against “Cro Cop” notice Fedor’s genius ability to impose his will — and not against some bum, mind you. Cro Cop was a killer heading into that bout. Fedor game plans as well as anyone in MMA. And more importantly he executes.

Against Nogueira, who at the time was the No. 1 heavyweight in the world, Fedor simply had his way with the brilliant Brazilian. Pay attention to the way the Russian throws punches on the ground. No one else has ever done it like him. I was in the building for that fight and when he hit “Minotuaro” with a shot to the head around the seven-minute mark it sounded like a shotgun had just gone off — and I was 20 rows up. Seriously.

Against Randleman, perhaps the most physically dangerous fighter in MMA, Fedor showed his grit. Shrugging off one of the most brutal throws I can ever remember seeing, Fedor calmly reversed a put-in-traction slam to a career-defining submission.

(When you’re done, you may want to watch Fedor’s win against Kazuyuki Fujita (Pictures) just to confirm he’s human.)

As far as Fedor-Arlovski, it’s an interesting match-up. Arlovski is extremely athletic and has as much confidence as a fighter should have. But I don’t believe he’s currently at the level Cro Cop or Nogueira were when they fought Fedor. Give him another year and a quality opponent or two and we might have a real fight on our hands — not that it would ever happen.
