This Week’s MMA Birthdays: Lyoto Machida Turns 36
By: Brian Knapp

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder Lyoto Machida will celebrate his 36th birthday on May 30.
Machida has compiled a 13-4 record since arriving in the UFC in February 2009. He captured the 205-pound title with a second round knockout against “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 2 winner Rashad Evans at UFC 98 a little more than two years later. Machida last appeared at UFC Fight Night “Machida vs. Mousasi in February, when he took a unanimous decision from onetime Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi at the Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil. A black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Shotokan karate, he has delivered 10 of his 21 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
“The Dragon” will seek to become the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s third two-division titleholder at UFC 175 in July, when he challenges the undefeated Chris Weidman for middleweight gold in the main event. Machida has beaten six former UFC champions: Evans, Randy Couture, Mauricio Rua, Tito Ortiz, B.J. Penn and Rich Franklin.

Will Lyoto Machida become a two-division champion at UFC 175? | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com
Lyoto Machida believes he can answer the question: How does one beat Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder Chris Weidman.
Machida will challenge Weidman for 185-pound supremacy in the UFC 175 main event on July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. In a May 4 interview with MMAFighting.com, “The Dragon” claimed he knew how to beat Weidman but stopped short of revealing his plans.
Undefeated in 11 professional bouts, Weidman captured the middleweight crown in July, when he knocked out longstanding champion Anderson Silva in the second round of their UFC 162 headliner. A little more than seven months later, the Serra-Longo Fight Team ace defeated Silva again, “The Spider” suffering a gruesome, fight-ending leg break when Weidman checked one of his kicks.
Machida, who held the UFC’s light heavyweight title from May 23, 2009 until May 8, 2010, has recorded back-to-back victories over Mark Munoz and Gegard Mousasi since downshifting to 185 pounds.
