WEC Signs Chinese Lightweight

Just days after Zuffa’s announcement that they had secured former NBA representative Mark Fischer as its Manager Director of UFC Asia, sister promotion WEC confirmed the acquisition of undefeated Chinese lightweight Tie Quan Zhang.

Zhang (11-0) is the first Chinese fighter to have penned an agreement with the WEC.

“Tiequan is an excellent addition to our lightweight division,” said WEC General Manager Reed Harris in a press release. “He trains at a tremendous camp in Beijing and we are excited to have him compete with the best lighter weight fighters in the world.”

The 25-year-old submission artist hails from China Top Team, which is headed by former Brazilian Top Team ace Ruy Menezes.

Zhang will make his promotional debut on Sept. 30 at WEC 51 against Boston native Alex Karalexis (10-5). Karalexis is 4-3 inside the WEC, and is coming off a loss to highly-touted prospect Anthony Pettis in April.
