Undercard Revealed for ‘Canelo’ vs. ‘GGG’ Mega Fight

It wasn’t too long ago in the past when major boxing pay-per-view events were anchored by a lone super fight, preceded by an undercard that featured talented fighters taking tomato cans. This occurrence was one of the leading reasons why the Sweet Science fell off in the eyes of the casual fans, but Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions has been at the forefront of change and on Sep. 16, the best possible matchup in the sport will be bolstered by stellar undercard.

Golden Boy Promotions officially unveiled the PPV-televised undercard of the enormous scrap between Gennady Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, which takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. De la Hoya’s company didn’t pull any punches with any of the lead-in bouts whatsoever.

For starters, the co-main event will see unbeaten featherweight contender Joseph “JoJo” Diaz (24-0, 13 KOs) take on Jorge Lara (29-0-2, 21 KOs) in a WBC title eliminator. The 2012 Olympian has been conquering everybody put in front of him, but Diaz will have his hands full Lara, who should be the toughest test of his career up to this point.

“It's a dream come true to be fighting in the co-main event of the Canelo vs. Golovkin card,” said Diaz. “I finally get the opportunity to fight for a title eliminator! I've been waiting my whole life to become a world champion. On Sep. 16, I'm going to give it everything I got, for all my fans out there.”

In another pairing of unbeaten young studs, former IBF bantamweight champion Randy Caballero (24-0, 14 KOs) will stand opposite Diego de la Hoya (19-0, 9 KOs) in a 10-round super bantamweight battle. Rounding out the PPV portion of the event will be a lightweight clash between Ryan Martin (19-0, 11 KOs) and Francisco Rojo (20-2, 13 KOs).

The action will begin on HBO Pay-Per-View at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
