Team Quest coaches Pat Healy and Brad Hannah are currently holding a six-week training camp for fighters from various Chinese teams at Xian Physical Education University in Shaanxi Province. One such fighter is Wenbo Liu, a light heavyweight who makes his Legend Fighting Championship debut against New Zealander Sam Brown on Oct. 30.

Over the course of the six weeks, Healy and Liu will blog their experiences for Sherdog.com. Today, Liu gives his first impression of the camp.

It’s the third day of training at camp and there is an incredible atmosphere here. Many of us have been in the MMA world for a long time and to see such a great level of instruction, and to be side-by-side with some of the greatest sanda fighters in China, is pretty incredible. I know I’m going to have a tough weight cut this time, but Pat assures me he has the right formula for me to get it done and not starve myself.

We’re training twice a day, three times if you’re on the sanda team. The afternoons are for more specialized fighters’ training and the evenings are a bit more basic for those who really want to begin to understand ground technique. I’m currently writing about this on my Weibo, which is our Chinese equivalent to Twitter. It’s amazing: So many people want to come to this camp that we have to tell them they cannot, because we already have 20 professional fighters and about 50-60 in the evening class.

Aaron Randolph from Legend is here and he told me that this is the introductory week, and that things are going to get harder as we progress. It’s exciting and scary at the same time, as we’re all quite exhausted from these first couple of days adjusting to training. One of the most interesting things I have seen is Na Shun -- a sanda coach here and a former sanda champion who competed against Cung Le years ago -- is rolling with us every day. I tried to wrestle him yesterday and it was like going up against a tree.

I can’t wait to see the changes I will have over these next six weeks. Sam Brown is going to get smashed!

For more information on this camp, contact Aaron Randolph ([email protected]).
