A pivotal welterweight showdown is on tap for Saturday night as former world champions Andre Berto and Shawn Porter will collide in the main event on a Showtime Championship Boxing card. The event will take place at gorgeous Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and at Friday’s official weigh-ins, both men were on the money.
Berto (31-4, 24 KOs), rebounded from a September 2015 setback to all-time great Floyd Mayweather by dispatching old rival Victor Ortiz within four rounds. The win over Ortiz, though, was a nearly a year ago but Berto looked tremendous at the weigh-ins. The former two-time welterweight champion came in at 146.5 pounds, giving the main event the expected green light.
The co-feature will see Jermell Charlo defend his WBC super welterweight title against Charles Hatley. Hatley (26-1-1, 18 KOs), a live underdog, was the first of the two to weigh-in and the Dallas native tipped the scale at 153.75 pounds. Houston’s Charlo (28-0, 13 KOs), who hasn’t fought since last May, checked in at 153.5 pounds, setting the stage for his first-ever world title defense.
The action will go live on Showtime beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
