Miguel Vazquez vs. Argenis Mendez

Round 1

Vazquez comes out and quickly establishes the jab. He lands a few of them early to keep a safe distance. Mendez fires off a hard overhand right but it’s blocked. Vazquez fires of another jab and tags his foe with a glancing right to the jaw. They clinch a few times at the midway point. Decent double right upstairs by Vazquez, who follows it up with a left/right that Mendez just barely avoids. Mendez counters a leaping loopy left hand with a short left hook late but it’s mostly a grazing blow. 10-9 Vazquez.

Round 2

Mendez misses with a powerful left hook to start the round. Decent action early, but Vazquez is the sharper of the two. Vazquez lands a sweeping right hand but his follow-up left hook misses by a wide margin. They tie each other up on the inside with a minute left. Mendez seems to be getting irritated by Vazquez’ movement and clinching. Nice stiff jab by Vazquez with 30 seconds left. Vazquez is moving side-to-side and its disallowing Mendez to get into a rhythm. 10-9 Vazquez.

Round 3

Mendez comes inside and eats a loopy left hand but he’s unfazed. Vazquez counters a lazy hook with a nice right/left upstairs that backs his foe into a corner. They clinch but their heads come together. Mendez complains about it but he’s not cut. Lead right and then a jab by Mendez. They exchange sizzling right hands but Mendez’ is harder. Neither is hurt as Vazquez regroups with the jab. They clinch again late and Vazquez is warned for it. Mendez cracks him with a nice left hook late and then a right. 10-9 Mendez.

Round 4

Vazquez goes with the jab early but as soon as Mendez gets inside, he ties him up. It happens again and referee Gregorio Alvarez scolds him. Hard left hook on the button by Mendez during an exchange but Vazquez walks right through it. A few more jabs by Vazquez but Mendez nails with a short right hand behind the ear. They trade jabs with 45 seconds left before Mendez just barely clips him with a left. Confetti begins to fall from the rafters but luckily it’s not bothering anybody. They clinch again late and Vazquez forces him into the ropes. Very close round. 10-9 Mendez.

Round 5

Early on in the frame, Mendez rakes a few hooks to the body. Vazquez gets all octopus on him again before splitting away to jab. Vazquez lands a double jab but misses with his follow-up right before tying his foe up. They miss wild right hooks and slam into each other, forcing another clinch. A left hook by Vazquez misses and it leads to another clinch, where they in-fight for a while along the ropes. Vazquez jabs to the body before they exchange lefts and rights upstairs. Decent right and then a left by Vazquez just before the bell. 10-9 Vazquez.

Round 6

They trade jabs a few times before getting into an exchange. Vazquez tags him with a sharp left upstairs but Mendez counters him with a right and left. Lead right to the temple by Mendez leads to a clinch. Vazquez dives in and leads with his head, but Mendez blocks it. Another clinch after they trade jabs. Mendez is very frustrated with how Vazquez keeps tying him up as he can’t get off more than one or two punches at a time. Another dirty clinch with some mauling and Vazquez is warned yet again, but no point is deducted. Right/left upstairs by Mendez late likely got him the round. 10-9 Mendez.

Round 7

Vazquez fires off a few jabs before darting out of range. Lead left hook by Mendez is blocked, which leads to a double jab by Vazquez. Very little action at the midway point, but Mendez does get off a decent right to the head. Vazquez comes back with a right of his own. Nice jag/straight by Vazquez at the minute mark before clinching. Few jabs by the two, but Vazquez comes over the top with a right hand before clinching. Finally, the ref takes a point away from Vazquez for repeated holding. 10-8 Mendez.

Round 8

Vazquez comes out with a sense of urgency as he presses right after Mendez. Hard jab by Vazquez snaps Mendez’ head back. Mendez jabs back but there seems to be a fire lit under Vazquez, who comes out with a four-punch combo to the head and body. Loopy overhand right by Vazquez just misses its mark but Mendez is out of position to counter. Mendez shrugs off a right hook but he can’t counter him with the left. Triple jab by Vazquez before clipping him with a left hook. Mendez swallows another slick jab just before the bell. 10-9 Vazquez.

Round 9

Mendez is the one with the jab early. He tags Vazquez with a short right upstairs but Vazquez comes right back with a left and right. Vazquez moves to his left and goes back to the jab, mystifying Mendez. Hard double jab by Mendez just as Vazquez comes inside. Vazquez comes inside and tags him with a nice overhand right. Another. Mendez tries to answer but Vazquez is already gone out the side door. Mendez misses a flurry of shots and pays for it courtesy of a few shots to the head and body late. 10-9 Vazquez.

Round 10

The fight could be up for grabs going into the final round. Vazquez backs off to start the frame but his jab is active. Mendez cracks him with a sizzling left hook but Vazquez takes it well. They trade jabs but Vazquez’ is stiffer. Mendez pops him with a decent check hook before getting tied up. Moderate counter right by Mendez with a minute left but Vazquez comes right back with a left hook. Jab by Mendez leads to a clinch and Vazquez tries to maul him on the inside. Counter right cross by Mendez with 20 seconds left, followed by a jab. Vazquez pops him with a short right uppercut just as the round ends. 10-9 Mendez (95-94 Mendez).

Julius Jackson vs. Jose Uzcategui

Round 1

Jackson is the first to throw and it’s his jab. Uzcategui fires off a left hook to the body and then a right. Jackson remains placid behind the jab, looking for an opening. Overhand right by Uzcategui is clean and it backs Jackson into the ropes. Uzcategui is swinging for the fences and nails Jackson with a huge right hook. Jackson is down and hurt. He beats Tony Weeks’ count but is shaky. Uzcategui is all over him, but he’s not wasting punches. A flurry and Jackson falls to his back again. Jackson beats the count but he is extremely woozy. He’s about to go any second now. Jackson tries to hold on but he’s felled by a short left that barely touches him. He’s up again and Weeks allows him to continue. Jackson is falling all over himself and trying to clinch. He falls to his knees but it’s ruled a slip. He somehow survives the round. 10-6 Uzcategui.

Round 2

Uzcategui comes right after him to start the round. Jackson still looks a little hazy but he’s tossing out his jab. Uzcategui opens up with a massive flurry to the head after getting drilled by a right cross. Jackson stumbles into the ropes as he’s badly rocked. He avoids a bomb from Uzcategui but as he tries to run away, a sweeping left hook drops him onto his back. He’s not out but Weeks has seen enough and halts the Blitzkrieg.
