Johnson, Evangelista Lead Strikeforce Challengers 11 Salaries

Lavar Johnson and Billy Evangelista were the big winners at Strikeforce Challengers 11, as both men earned $10,000 to lead the fighter payouts.

The event, which took place on Friday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., was attended by 3,565 spectators and grossed $60,885 in ticket sales, according to figures released by the California State Athletic Commission.

Johnson dismantled opponent Virgil Zwicker inside the first five-minute period, as the heavyweight’s strength and punching power proved to be too much for Zwicker ($3,000) to endure. Evangelista had a bit more trouble defeating Waachiim Spiritwolf ($2,000), as the game welterweight fought valiantly to the final bell. Evangelista’s undefeated record, however, remained intact, as he took home a unanimous decision victory.

Main event winner Bobby Voelker was awarded $9,000, as he avenged an earlier loss to favored Roger Bowling ($3,500) in a losing effort. Though Bowling controlled the early action with his superior athleticism, Voelker stayed tough, managed to stun Bowling with punches in round two and earned a technical knockout. Bowling had defeated Voelker by unanimous technical decision at Strikeforce Challengers 8 after an accidental eye poke ended the bout prematurely.
