SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Former World Extreme Cagefighting middleweight champion Paulo Filho took down and submitted Tatsuhiko Nishizaka with a first-round kimura in the Bitetti Combat Nordeste 5 main event on Saturday at the Barueri Gymnasium.
“As everybody knows, my biggest fight is against depression, but I’m wining this fight and started to train again,” Filho said. “I hope in 2010 I’ll return 100 percent.”
In the co-main event, former EliteXC middleweight champion Murilo Rua stopped Holland’s Jason Jones on second-round ground strikes.
The aggressive Jones kept Rua on his heels with an impressive sequence of punches. However, the Pride Fighting Championships veteran weathered the attack and slowly established his superiority, standing up and on the ground. Ultimately, he secured the back mount and hammered away with punches until the referee stepped in 3:20 into round two.
American fighters Rico Washington Sr. and Shane Williams acquitted themselves well but came up short in losses to Gustavo Machado and Cassiano Tytschyo. Machado, an International Fight League veteran, has rattled off six straight wins.
Finally, the experienced Carina Damm mounted and finished Daiana Silva dos Santos 3:26 into the third round of the lone women’s bout. Damm, who engaged dos Santos in two spirited rounds of stand-up fighting before putting her away, extended her winning streak to eight fights.
