Fighter Playlist: Patrick Cummins

Patrick Cummins makes his MMA debut on Saturday, the culmination of countless hours logged training in the gym and competing on the wrestling mat. But time isn’t the only thing that the 205-pound newcomer -- who faces Terrell Brown on the undercard of Strikeforce “Henderson vs. Babalu II” at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. -- has forfeited since relocating to California in order to hone his skills at Orange County’s Reign Training Center.

“Since I moved here, I haven’t been to any concerts. I’m kinda bummed about that,” the former Penn State Nittany Lion says. “There’s not many shows in O.C., so it’s like, if I want to see something good, I guess I have to go to L.A.”

Cummins’ voracious appetite for music is readily apparent, and further evidenced by the ultra-hip selections which he submitted to Sherdog.com for this week’s Fighter Playlist.

“I get sick of music so quickly, unless it’s something really great, so I’m constantly searching for the newest, best music,” says Cummins. “Growing up, I liked more hardcore music. But now, I just feel like I’ve kinda relaxed a little and I’m a little more mellow. But I still like something with a good, hard beat that I can dance to.”

For this particular tracklist, Cummins says, “it’s everything. The more upbeat stuff is more of a training mix, but I figured I’d throw a couple in there that I just liked.”

1. “My Girls” -- Animal Collective
2. “Vanished” -- Crystal Castles

3. “Hearts on Fire” -- Cut Copy
“I love that for training, even though the lyrics aren’t really training music. The beat just gets me up, gets me movin’.”

4. “Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare” -- Matt & Kim

5. “Like It or Not” -- Architecture in Helsinki
“That’s the song I think I wanna come out to. I haven’t told anyone yet, but for some reason, I think that’s just funny. It’s a good song, gets me goin’, but it’s just funny for a fight song. So I think I’ll roll with that.”

6. “Drink to Moving On” -- Grand National

7. “Ion Square” -- Bloc Party
“I’ve been a fan of Bloc Party for a long time. I’ve seen them a bunch of times. A couple of their albums, I was like, ‘ehhh’, but this new one has a bunch of good tracks on it. The lyrics in Bloc Party say a lot to me. They’re a pretty damn cool band.”

8. “Dance Yrself Clean” -- LCD Soundsystem
“It starts a little slow, but, man, it’s awesome. Their new album, I like that a lot.”

9. “1940 (AmpLive Remix)” -- The Submarines
“That’s just one I threw in there. It’s kinda like a chick song, but when they remixed it, it kinda pumped it up a bit. That’s a workout jam, I’d say.”

10. “Animal” -- Miike Snow
“I get a lot of great playlists on Pandora on his channel. I’ll put that on and it stays in a good area for me. I don’t have to skip through a bunch of crappy songs. He’s just kinda electro-indie-pop. That’s probably his best song, or at least his most well-known.”

11. “Osaka Loop Line” -- Discovery

It goes without saying that Cummins’ tracklist is a bit more chic than your average fighter’s fare. With his All-American wrestling credentials and famous training partners like Jason “Mayhem” Miller and “King” Mo Lawal, a big win on Saturday could generate Pitchfork-level buzz and make Cummins a stylish prospect to watch in 2011.
