Felix Diaz, Miguel Vazquez to Meet in PBC on FS1 Main Event May 28
Premier Boxing Champions announced Friday that Olympic
gold medalist Felix Diaz will take on former world champion Miguel
Vazquez in the main event of a PBC on FS1 card, scheduled for May
28. The Dancehall in San Antonio, Texas will be the host location
with the action going live on the sports cable network beginning at
10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
Diaz (17-1, 8 KOs) is a two-time Olympian representing his native Dominican Republic. He captured Olympic gold at the 2008 Games in Beijing before turning pro. He competed as welterweight and eventually went to war with former world champion Lamont Peterson, though he lost a majority decision to him last October. The 32-year-old Bronx resident dropped back down to 140 pounds in an effort to eventually capture a world title.
“This is a great opportunity for me and I'm looking forward
to the challenge,” said Diaz. “Miguel Vazquez is a great former
champion and I'll have to be at my best. I'm very thankful to be
the main event again and I'm thrilled to fight in San Antonio for
the first time.”
Standing in his way is Vazquez (35-5, 13 KOs), who captured the IBG lightweight title in 2010 by outpointing Ji-Hoon Kim. The Guadalara, Mexico, native defended his crown six times before losing it via split decision to Mickey Bey in 2014. Vazquez last fought in October when he was upset by Argenis Mendez via unanimous decision. He is desperate to get back on track.
“I'm very excited for this opportunity to face a skilled Olympic gold medalist like Felix Diaz,” said Vazquez. “He's a good fighter, but he's never faced someone as experienced and talented as I am. I look forward to a great victory in front of the great fight fans of San Antonio as I march towards becoming a world champion again.”
More fights, including the co-main event, will be announced soon.
