Julio Cesar Chavez used to get mobbed when walking down Olvera Street in Los Angeles to promote one of his fights.
The Mexican and Mexican-American fans loved Chavez's willingness to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere. Chavez would leave everything he had in the ring.
The same was true for Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. Win or lose, the fans loved these fighters because they were willing to go out on their shields.
UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (9-0) seems to be developing that kind of following, as evidenced by hundreds of fans who showed up for a news conference at Nokia Plaza to promote Velasquez’s fight against Junior dos Santos (13-1) on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. -- the UFC's debut on Fox.
