Former two-division world champion Devon Alexander is looking to
get his career back on track and he’ll get that chance on
Wednesday, Oct. 14 in the main event of a Premier
Boxing Champions on ESPN telecast. Alexander is slated to face
Aron Martinez in the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz, in a
10-round welterweight showdown.
Alexander captured the vacant WBC junior welterweight title by conquering Junior Witter in 2009 and then added the IBF version by knocking out Juan Urango the following year. But he lost his 140-pound throne to Timothy Bradley in 2011 before snatching the IBF welterweight crown by defeating Randall Bailey in 2012.
But “Alexander the Great” has fallen on hard times, losing two of
his last three bouts, his most recent being a one-sided shellacking
at the hands of Amir Khan last December. Needing a win to stay
relevant, Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) might get his wish against
Martinez when they lock horns.
"I'm very excited to return to the ring and I'm anxious to show people that I'm still an elite fighter," said Alexander. "This is a huge opportunity to be on primetime and I'm going to make sure everything is in order at camp so I'm there 100 percent mentally and physically on fight night."
Martinez (19-4-1, 4 KOs) has been equally disappointing of late, having lost three of his last four. In his last two bouts, he was stopped in the fifth by Josesito Lopez and then in June, he fought well but dropped a split decision to former world champ Robert Guerrero.
"I'm very grateful for this opportunity to fight on such a big stage against a great fighter in Devon Alexander," said Martinez. "Arizona has a huge Mexican boxing community and I look forward to the support from their terrific fans."
Also appearing the card will be the IBF featherweight championship between titlist Andy Lee (21-1, 8 KOs) defending his belt against former flyweight, junior bantamweight and bantamweight world champion Fernando Montiel (54-4-2, 39 KOs).
The telecast will be aired live on ESPN starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A full off-TV undercard will be announced soon.
