Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by FoxSports.com's Damon Martin.
On Monday, Bellator MMA announced the signing of three-time NCAA Division 1 national wrestling champion Ed Ruth, after locking up 18-year-old Olympic wrestling hopeful Aaron Pico to a deal last November. Breen and Martin discuss Bellator's decision to tap the amateur wrestling pipeline in hopes of landing a star, weigh in on the long-term potential of Pico and Ruth and what makes them coveted athletes and look at the recent successes (or lack thereof) for prized amateur wrestlers in MMA.
Breen and Martin also rap on whether or not Bellator will be aided in its pursuit of talent by the UFC-Reebok deal, which promotion “the next Ronda Rousey” would hypothetically sign with and why, and how surreal it would be to see UFC veteran Matt Lindland coach his way to a gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Grab your credential and get a seat in “Press Row.”
