Boxing: Roman Gonzalez-Brian Viloria Added to ‘GGG’ vs. Lemieux Event

HBO on Tuesday added some major firepower to its Oct. 17 pay-per-view event which will feature Gennady Golovkin versus David Lemieux.

Nicaragua’s Roman Gonzalez, one of the most devastating punchers in the smaller weight classes, will defend his WBC flyweight title against former world champion Brian Viloria in the co-feature. Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) has scored seven consecutive knockouts and 12 of his last 13 bouts have all ended with one of his opponents seeing stars.

Gonzalez made his long-awaited U.S. television debut in May on the Golovkin-Monroe card, where he flattened veteran scrapper Edgar Sosa, a former world champ as well. Most expect Gonzalez to have similar success against “The Hawaiian Punch” when they meet, but Viloria will be one of the most experienced fighters that “Chocolatito” will have faced up to this point.

Viloria captured world titles at light flyweight (twice) and flyweight and has won his last four contests, three by knockout. Viloria holds wins over Hernan Marquez, Ulises Solis and Julio Cesar Miranda. Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs) is on what most experts believe is his last attempt at regaining a world title.
