Boxing: Erislandy Lara-Delvin Rodriguez Undercard Fills Up

Mike SloanJun 10, 2015

The next edition of the Premier Boxing Champions card on Spike TV is this Friday, and it should be an intriguing event with solid matchups.

The card will be held inside the UIC Pavilion in Chicago and will be headlined by Cuban sensation Erislandy Lara (20-2-2, 12 KOs) taking on tough veteran Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-4, 16 KOs). The chief support bout will be unbeaten Russian slugger Artur Beterbiev (8-0, 8 KOs) against Alexander Johnson (16-2, 7 KOs).

The undercard finally filled up completely and it’s among the better preliminary portions of a boxing lineup this year.

Polish heavyweight, the popular Artur Szpilka, will lock horns with Manuel Quezada in a 10-round clash in the featured bout of the prelims. Szpilka (18-1, 13 KOs) recently was stopped in the tenth round at the hands of eventual Wladimir Klitschko opponent Bryant Jennings, but he bounced back with a terrific decision win over elite-level fighter Tomasz Adamek in November.

Quezada, originally from Mexico but now living in California, has taken on quality opponents like Chris Arreola, Jason Gavern and Steve Cunningham, though he’s lost to all three. In fact, Quezada has dropped five straight fights coming into his bout with “Szpila the Pin.”

Rounding out the card is Anthony Peterson (34-1, 22 KOs) locking horns with Ammeth Diaz (32-11, 23 KOs) in a 10-round super lightweight bout. Peterson, the brother of former world champion Lamont Peterson, has won four consecutive bouts after losing for the first time ever as a pro, a seventh round disqualification against Brandon Rios. Diaz has spent his entire career facing tough guys and he’s won his last two.

Rising light heavyweight contender Eleider Alvarez (16-0, nine KOs) is slated to face sturdy veteran Anatoliy Dudchenko (19-3, 13 KOs). Also on the bill is Ronald Hearns (27-5, 21 KOs) fighting David Thomas (10-4-2, 8 KOs) in a super welterweight battle and Domonique Dolton (16-0, eight KOs) dueling Victor Fonseca (9-4-1, seven KOs), also at 154 pounds.

The rest of the prelims will be filled with local talent.

The PBC on Spike telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The doors to the UIC Pavilion will open at 5 p.m. CT and tickets to the event are still on sale.
