Amir Imam-Fernando Angulo Scrap Added to July 18 Showtime Boxing Card
The anticipated showdown between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Marcos
Reyes just got an intriguing undercard bout added to the marquee.
It was announced earlier Friday that the Showtime-televised card
will also feature a super lightweight duel between unbeaten Amir
Imam and Fernando Angulo.
Imam has been making waves in the sport, winning 14 of his 17 professional bouts by knockout. “Young Master” has been tearing through everybody, most recently a fifth-round stoppage of Fidel Maldonado Jr. and a lopsided unanimous decision win over Walter Castillo. The New Yorker, considered by many to be as sure a future champion as anybody, will be taking on Angulo in what should be his toughest test to date.
“I’m excited for the fight. My dream is finally coming true,” Imam
said in a statement. “This is basically my title shot right here.
This is the biggest fight of my career and I know I can’t mess it
up. Not everyone gets to make it here, but I get to show the world
my talents once again.”
Angulo, who was born in Ecuador but lives in Venezuela, has never looked better in his career. His five-fight winning streak comes on the heels of dropping six of eight. Angulo also fought Juan Diaz for the WBA lightweight strap back in 2006 but he fell short in what thus far remains his sole world title challenge. Angulo (29-9, 16 KOs) knows he can ill afford to lose to Imam.
“I'm excited to face Amir Imam on July 18,” Angulo said. “This is a great opportunity for me to get a huge win on Showtime and in front of the great boxing fans in El Paso. I’m not going to waste this chance.”
According to a press release earlier today, the winner of the Imam vs. Angulo scrap will be the WBC’s No. 1 mandatory challenger to the winner of the recently announced Lucas Matthysse vs. Viktor Postol bout for the vacant WBC super lightweight world title.
Imam-Angulo is slated to be a 10-rounder and will be the opening bout of the televised portion of the card. The event will air live on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and will be held inside the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
