Thanks to a 69-second shellacking of Sergei Pavlovich in the UFC 295 co-main event at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, Aspinall captured the interim heavyweight crown. In most cases, that would assure the Brit of a future shot at reigning heavyweight king Jon Jones. However, the promotion has so far seemed intent on booking Jones vs. Stipe Miocic once “Bones” returns to full health. Some things are never as easy as they seem, but Aspinall is still rewarded for his work in this space, as he climbs to No. 1 in Sherdog’s latest divisional poll based on a ledger that includes wins over Pavlovich, Marcin Tybura, Alexander Volkov, and Sergey Spivak. For Sherdog.com staff, that carries more weight than Jones’ lone heavyweight triumph against Ciryl Gane.
Elsewhere, Alex Pereira planted his flag in yet another division after vanquishing Jiri Prochazka via second-round technical knockout in the UFC 295 headliner. The newly crowned light heavyweight champ looks like a force in his new weight class, and he moves to No. 2 at 205 pounds as a result of his latest effort.
Meanwhile, 15th-ranked strawweight Lupita Godinez garnered her fourth victory of 2023, a split-decision triumph over No. 14 Tabatha Ricci. With an overall winning streak of six consecutive fights at 115 pounds, “Loopy” climbs to 12th in the divisional rankings.
Finally, there’s a bit of housekeeping to attend to at bantamweight, as ex-champ T.J. Dillashaw exits the rankings after a year in retirement. As a result, Rizin Fighting Federation champion Juan Archuleta enters the 135-pound rankings at No. 15.
