CageSport XXVII and Justin Harrington Rock the Emerald Queen Casino

Oct 07, 2013

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Tacoma, WA Halquist Productions’ CageSport XXVII turned out to be one of the most exciting cards of an already very impressive year for the Northwest’s premier MMA promotion. In the night’s main event, Combat Sport and Fitness’ Justin Harrington defeated Harrison Bevens for the vacant CageSport lightweight championship. Making his return to the cage was Victory Athletics’ Cory Devela who defeated Byron Sutton in the semi-main event in dominating fashion. An electric undercard had the sold out Emerald Queen Casino buzzing all night.

Harrington (6-0) and Bevens (6-2) who each brought a large following to the fight filled the room with tension as the opening bell sounded. Bevens attacked first with two straight punches that landed flush on Harrington’s face which started a back and forth striking war to begin the fight. Midway through the first round, Bevens’ fans amped up their support by chanting “Harrison” trying to motivate their fighter which helped setup a very even first round.

In the second round, Harrington took advantage of a Bevens stumble and threw a sweeping leg kick towards the ankles of Bevens that tripped him up allowing Harrington to jump on top and gain back control. While in position, Harrington was able to slip in a rear naked choke that forced Bevens to tap 1:32 into the round giving Harrington the victory and the title.

After not fighting for over three years, Cory Devela (12-5) made a memorable return when he took on Byron Sutton (7-4) in the semi-main event. Devela wasted no time in taking down Sutton and getting on top where he unleashed a vicious ground n pound session that opened up a huge gash on Sutton’s head. The fight was stopped by the referee at 3:11 into the first round giving Devela the TKO victory and an opportunity.

Immediately after the fight, promoter, Brian Halquist, entered the cage with CageSport middleweight champion, Brent Knopp, and asked the two if they were interested in a title fight at upcoming CageSport XXVIII on December 7th. Both fighters agreed and made it official. Middleweight title is on the line at CageSport XXVIII!

The thunderous undercard saw numerous fighters making their professional debuts and giving a good first impression to fans in the showroom. Official results are below:
