Sengoku 'Seventh Battle' Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com reports from the Yoyogi National Stadium Second Gymnasium in Tokyo with live play-by-play of Sengoku's "Seventh Battle."

Seiya Kawahara vs. Nick Denis
Round 1
Denis lands a right hook in the center of the ring. Kawahara backs away and is caught with a headkick that drops him to the canvas. Kawahara recovers quickly and clinches with the Canadian fighter. Denis moves his opponent to the corner, where he knees the body. Now in the center of the ring, Kawahara lands a solid right hand, but is dropped by a stiff right-handed counter punch. Denis pounces and knees the head from side-control. Hammerfists rain down until referee Samio Kimura shows mercy at 2:36 of the opening frame.

Tetsuya Yamada vs. Ronnie Mann
Round 1
Mann steps forward and cracks Yamada with a straight right hand. And another. Yamada drops levels for a single and gets it after a brief struggle. Mann sweeps his opponent and lands in the mount. Yamada gives up his back to avoid punishment. Mann locks on a body triangle and hits the head with both hands. Yamada turns and ends up being mounted again, but he is able to escape and transition to an inverted heel hook. Mann frees his leg and takes the top position in Yamada’s guard. Yamada looks for a kneebar and it’s deep. Mann escapes and the fighters scramble for position. Mann takes the top position and hits the body with his right hand. Mann stands over his opponent with 10 seconds remaining. Referee Tomoki Matsumiya stands Yamada just before the bell sounds.

Round 2
Mann lands a glancing right hand and Yamada looks for a standing kimura. Mann takes Yamada down and fights off the kimura from the top in guard. Yamada lets go of the arm and the fighters stand. Yamada displays a poor kickboxing game and is easily taken down on the heels of a flying knee. Yamada gets to his feet and is quickly tripped back to the canvas. From his back, Yamada looks for another kimura as time expires.

Round 3
Yamada blasts Mann with a left-legged head kick, but is taken down. Yamada goes to the rubber guard, but is unable to mount any offense from his back. Mann stands and invites Yamada to follow. Yamada whiffs on another headkick attempt and falls to the ground. Mann engages him briefly on the floor before standing. Mann connects with a straight right that knocks Yamada off balance. Mann steps into Yamada’s guard and then backs out. Mann gets a single leg and throws hammerfists with his right hand. Mann latches on an ankle lock and Yamada counters with a kneebar. Both fighters escape and Yamada takes the top position before the bell sounds.

Official judges Gen Isono, Tenshin Matsumoto and Takashi Kobayashi all see the contest 30-29 for Ronnie Mann. It looks like the Sengoku judges are unafraid to score 10-10 rounds, to say the least.

Shintaro Ishiwatari vs. Chan Sung Jung
Round 1
Jung comes out swinging for the fences. Ishiwatari fires back and the aroma of violence fills the air. The fighters clinch and Jung knees the body. The fighters separate and a slugfest unfolds, with Jung getting the best of the exchange. A far-reaching left drops Ishiwatari to his knees. Ishiwatari steps forward in the pocket and lands a right hook. The brawl is on, folks. Toe-to-toe goes the fight, with both men connecting with leather. Jung clinches with Ishiwatari in the corner until referee Kenichi Serizawa restarts them in the center. Jung blasts Ishiwatari with a right hand and charges forward. Ishiwatari gives up his back and is choked out cold by a rear-naked choke. He taps just before going to sleep at the 4:29 mark. Fantastic fight.

Masanori Kanehara vs. Jong Man Kim
Round 1
The fighters trade sloppy strikes early. Kim lands two right hands and Kanehara starts to work the lead leg of his opponent with low kicks. Kim continues to throw sloppy right hand leads while his left leg is kicked just above the knee. The pace slows until Kanehara lands a clean right hand “Superman” punch. Kim rushes forward and is blasted by a right hand and a sneaky knee to the face. Kim falls to his back and begins to stall from his back. Kanehara moves to half-guard before the horn sounds.

Round 2
Sporting a swollen and red left eye, Kim comes out swinging to start round two. Kanehara avoids the power of the South Korean and stays out of harm’s way using footwork. Referee Kenichi Serizawa calls for action and Kim responds with a single-leg. Kanehara quickly reverses the technique and takes the top position. From half-guard, Kanehara looks for a arm-triangle, but loses it when he moves to mount. Kim bucks and turns and escapes the dominant position. From his opponent’s guard, Kim throws a right hand and then stands to his feet. One minute remains. Kim throws a sloppy one-two and eats a straight right for his effort. Kanehara gets a single-leg takedown and is stuck in a guillotine as the round ends.

Round 3
After abandoning the low kicks in the second frame, Kanehara goes back to the leg twice to begin the final period. Kanehara is playing it smart as he kicks the lead leg and keeps his distance. Both fighters step forward and exchange haymakers. Kanehara slips a punch and grazes a head kick with his left foot. Kanehara gets a single leg and hits the body while fighting off a guillotine from half-guard. Kanehara gets his head free and stands with one minute remaining. Time is called with 30 seconds left to warn both fighters for inactivity. The fight is restarted and the fighters go for it in the final moments. Kim lands a right and Kanehara connects with a head kick and a single leg to close the fight.

Marlon Sandro vs. Matt Jaggers
Round 1
Sandro gets a right hand through to the chin of Jaggers and follows with a clean takedown. From the top in guard, Sandro hits the body with his right hand and moves to half. Jaggers escapes to his feet and lands a straight right to counter a front kick. Sandro slips under a power punch and gets an easy double leg. Sandro slowly advances to the mount, but gives up the position while looking for an armbar. Jaggers stays tight in the top position for the round’s final 10 seconds.

Round 2
Sandro lands a spinning-back kick to the chest and gets a quick double to start the second stanza. Sandro moves to side-control, where he knees the body and head until Jaggers gets half guard. Sandro works for a head and arm choke and Jaggers stands. Sandro quickly stays on his opponent, and reapplies the arm-triangle while standing. Jaggers is trapped in the corner and is choked out cold while standing from the kata-gatame at 2:57 of the second.

L.C. Davis vs. Michihiro Omigawa
Round 1
Following a long feeling-out process, Omigawa trips Davis to the canvas into half guard. Omigawa stays tight on his opponent and moves to side control. Omigawa patiently controls Davis and sneaks into the mount. He postures up to unload strikes and Davis quickly turns his back. Omigawa locks in both hooks and ends up back in the mount. Omigawa spins for an armbar but runs out of time. Dominant round for the UFC veteran.

Round 2
Once again a long feel-out process is ended by an Omigawa trip. From half guard, Omigawa ties up the head and looks for an arm-in guillotine. Davis frees his head and stands. Davis, who looks rather flat tonight, seems a step slower than usual. Omigawa lands a right hand and Davis pieces together two punches at the end of the round.

Round 3
Omigawa shoots a quick single and Davis has none of it. Omigawa pushes Davis against the ropes and gets an inside-leg trip takedown. Omigawa rides the top tightly and advances to side control. Looking to set up a D’arce, Omigawa switches to a guillotine while Davis scrambles. Omigawa pulls guard and loses the choke after a few seconds. Omigawa sweeps Davis directly into the mount, where he tees off with both hands to the head until the bell sounds.

James Thompson vs. Jim York
Round 1
Thompson rushes in and nearly falls over top of the ropes. York cracks Thompson with a left hand that drops him to the canvas. Thompson stands and is caught in a guillotine. York torques the neck but he can’t finish. York lets go and blasts Thompson with an uppercut. York defends two takedown attempts and racks up punishment with a double jab. Thompson answers with a left straight that hurts York. Thompson rushes in but York recovered quickly. The fighters clinch and then trade. York then lands a left straight that knocks Thompson flat. Referee Tomoki Matsumiya steps in at 4:33 of the first.

Hideki Kadowaki vs. Nam Phan
Round 1
Kadowaki connects with a straight right. Phan smashes a right hook to the body. Phan jabs and throws to the midsection with his left. Kadowaki slips a few punches and drives a right hand home. Phan continues to attack the body to both setup and complete punching combinations to two levels. Kadowaki gets a little lazy with his footwork and is knocked out by a right hook. Referee Yoshinori Umeki saves the fallen fighter at 3:09 of round one.

Hatsu Hioki vs. Chris Manuel
Round 1
Hioki wastes no time in closing the distance and getting a takedown. Hioki punches the body with his right hand from half guard. Hioki moves to mount and transitions to Manuel’s back. Hioki moves to a rolling armbar, but the American Top Team product is game. Manuel escapes danger and gets to his feet. Hioki gets a fast takedown and moves quickly to side control. Hioki brilliantly slides to the mount. Hioki is aggressive with his hands and he bashes the head. Hioki stands momentarily but goes to side control. He locks on an armbar and switches to a triangle choke. Manuel rolls over to defend and Hioki transitions back to an armbar. Manuel taps quickly at the 4:12 mark.

Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal vs. Ryo Kawamura
Round 1
Lawal kicks the front leg and gets a smooth double leg. Kawamura stands and Lawal lands a knee to the body before tripping his opponent to the floor. Lawal gets a high crotch and slams Kawamura on his head. And again. And once again. Lawal is a powerhouse. Referee Samio Kimura breaks a stalemate in the corner. Kawamura has canvas burn all over his forehead from being tossed around. Lawal ducks under a punching flurry and pulls Kawamura to the floor with a double leg. Lawal gestures to the crowd and lands some stiff right hands before the bell sounds.

Round 2
An unintentional eye poke from Lawal forces a break in the action to start round two. Kawamura is given a few minutes to recover and the action is back on. As soon as the bout resumes, Lawal again takes an open hand to Kawamura’s left eye. A yellow card is given for the foul. Mo explodes into a flying knee that grazes the head. A Kawamura kick to the body is caught and Lawal pins the Japanese fighters against the ropes until he backs off. Kawamura ducks his head and throws a punching flurry that is easily evaded by Lawal. He slips the punches and drops levels for a pretty double leg. Referee Kimura restarts the fighters in the center of the ring and Lawal gets another takedown.

Round 3
Lawal ducks under a desperate combination from Kawamura and gets a slick takedown. Lawal moves to the back and hits the ribs with his left hand. He starts to pound with his right hand, giving Kawamura an exit to his feet. It doesn’t last long as Lawal muscles his opponent directly back to the floor. Lawal piks Kawamura up and deposits him directly on his head with one minute remaining. Lawal pounces for the finish but Kawamura hangs tough and gets to his feet. Lawal gets another takedown before the horn sounds.
