CSAC: Sylvia, Arlovski Lead Affliction Paydays
Sherdog.com Staff Jul 22, 2008
The latest addition to Tim Sylvia
(Pictures)’s bank account could go a long
way towards dulling the residual pain left over from the two-time
UFC heavyweight champion’s loss to Fedor
Emelianenko (Pictures) at Affliction: Banned last
Saturday in Anaheim, Calif.
Sylvia raked in an event-high 800,000 dollars for his first fight outside the UFC since May 2005, according to figures released Monday by the California State Athletic Commission. His bout against Emelianenko for the vacant World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight resulted in his stunning 36-second submission defeat to the stoic Russian. The 32-year-old Pat Miletich (Pictures) protégé made nearly three times as much as Emelianenko, who was paid 300,000 dollars for little more than half a minute of work.
In fact, Emelianenko's purse was third-highest among fighters who
competed on the card, though the Russian likely earned additional
and substantial compensation that did not have to be disclosed to
the CSAC. Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei
Arlovski (Pictures) earned 750,000 dollars, a
250,000-dollar win bonus included. Four other fighters -- Josh Barnett
(Pictures) (300,000), Matt
Lindland (Pictures) (300,000), Ben Rothwell
(Pictures) (250,000) and Vitor
Belfort (Pictures) (140,000) -- banked six figures.
Lindland and Belfort were awarded 75,000-dollar and 70,000-dollar
bonuses respectively.
All told, the Affliction promotion doled out just a shade more than 3.3 million dollars in salary. A final attendance of 14,832 at the Honda Center resulted in a 2,085,510-dollar gate for the promotion, according to the CSAC. That figure will help offset expenses Affliction incurred paying the 20 mixed martial artists who competed and two others -- Justin Levens (Pictures) and Ray Lizama (Pictures) -- who did not, though the ultimate financial success of the show will depend on the number of pay-per-view buys it brought in.
Remaining fighter salaries for Affliction: Banned are listed below:
• Renato Sobral (Pictures) – 90,000 (includes 30,000 win bonus)
• Paul Buentello (Pictures) – 80,000 (includes 20,000 win bonus)
