Zavurov-Magomedov Headlines M-1 Challenge 30 in Orange County
A welterweight title clash between Shamil
Zavurov (pictured) and Rashid
Magomedov will serve as the main event for
M-1 Challenge 30, M-1 Global's final effort on Showtime in
2011.
Sherdog.com confirmed the matchup with a source close to the bout on Tuesday. Also expected to showcase a lightweight title defense by Daniel Weichel, the event is slated to take place Dec. 9 from The Hangar at the O.C. Fair and Events Center in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Zavurov was originally schedule to lock horns with Magomedov at M-1
Challenge 28 on Nov. 12. However, Zavurov was forced to withdraw
from the contest due to injury. Magomedov remains the only man to
ever beat Zavurov, earning a split decision victory over the future
welterweight champion two years ago.
Since that time, Zavurov has won 13 consecutive fights, winning the M-1 welterweight strap last year and defending it twice successfully in 2011. Most recently, the 27-year-old competed on July 7, earning a technical knockout over Zhanybek Amatov at Fight Nights' “Battle of Moscow 4.”
Like his foe, Magomedov has tasted defeat only once as a professional. Following a split decision loss to Magomedrasul Khasbulaev in 2010, the welterweight has rattled off six straight wins. His last in-cage appearances came on three consecutive days last month, as Magomedov earned wins on Oct. 7, 8 and 9 at the World Martial Arts Championship in Ukraine.
The German won the belt just days ago at M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Monson,” scoring a first-round knockout over Jose Figueroa to capture the championship. Though an official opponent has yet to be named for Weichel, several notable lightweights are expected to compete at the event, including Figueroa, former M-1 champion Artiom Damkovsky and fast-rising, unbeaten 22-year-old Alexander Sarnavskiy.
