UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman Hospitalized After Rescuing Parents from House Fire

Mark Coleman saved both his parents from a raging house fire, then went back in for the dog. He had to be lifeflighted to the hospital.

Mark Coleman is fighting for his life after saving his parents from a fire at their home in Fremont, Ohio, on Tuesday.

According to an Instagram post from his daughter, Morgan Coleman, the UFC Hall of Famer was airlifted to a local hospital, where he is currently in critical condition due to smoke inhalation.

“As many know, our dad was involved in a house fire early this morning along with his parents and beloved dog, hammer,” Morgan Coleman wrote. “He managed to carry both of his parents out of the house but despite his best efforts was not able to save [our dog] Hammer. He was life-flighted to the hospital where he is currently battling for his life after this heroic act.

“Our father has always been our hero and means the world to us. He is and always will be a fighter. The strongest [and] bravest man I know. Please continue to pray for him and our family during this extremely difficult time. We will miss our sweet Hammer so deeply.

“Thank you for all the love and support. Hammer house for life.”

According to a report from WTOL11, seven different fire departments arrived at the home on Tuesday, and the roof collapsed shortly after firefighting crews entered the building. The fire reportedly began in the kitchen but its exact cause is currently unknown.

Former UFC fighter Wes Sims, a longtime Coleman friend, also provided an update on the situation via Facebook.

“I’m a very firm believer in the power of prayer,” Sims wrote. “I sent family and some friends a few pictures of Mark Coleman’s current condition. I know Mark, if he could talk he’d say ‘film this s—t, Wes, we are going viral!’

“Mark’s parents’ house burnt down last night. Mark saved both [his parents] and went back for Hammer, his dog. He was life flighted to Toledo and is currently intubated and sedated. I swear to God he’s one of the toughest individuals ever created, been through so much a movie at this point could not give his life’s work justice!”



Coleman, 59, became the Las Vegas-based promotion’s first-ever heavyweight champion when he made a victorious run through the tournament at UFC 10. He repeated the feat at UFC 11 and later transitioned to Pride Fighting Championships, where he won the organizations’s grand prix with a knockout of Igor Vovchanchyn in May 2000. “The Hammer” was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2008.
