UFC on Fuel ‘Sanchez vs. Ellenberger’ Results and Play-by-Play




Sherdog.com will report from the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Neb., at approximately 6:20 p.m. ET with play-by-play and live results of UFC on Fuel 1, headlined by a welterweight bout between Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez.

Bernardo Magalhaes vs. Tim Means
Round 1
Magalhaes opens up with a kick to the lead leg of the southpaw Means, then circles out of the range of the taller man. Means looks for straight punches and denies a long shot from the Brazilian with a big knee. Another knee lands the next time “Trekko” comes inside, then another. The next one lands square on Magalhaes’ jaw and sends him stumbling backward to the floor. Means pounces and looks to lock up a choke, but Magalhaes sweeps swiftly out of danger. Back on the feet, it’s not going any better for Magalhaes, who keeps absorbing knees and jabs from the American. Means closes out the round with some crisp leg kicks and another knee.

Round 2
Magalhaes tries another single-leg early in the second, but Means shakes him off again and goes back to walking him around the cage. Means puts a solid left hand on Magalhaes’ face, then one to the breadbasket. He snaps off some quick jabs on the Brazilian’s bloodied nose; Magalhaes answers with punches of his own which mostly pull up short. He dives for another takedown and Means hops away again. Means is landing left hands at will as he moves Magalhaes around the edge of the cage. A left-handed liver shot has Magalhaes shooting, but Means again denies him and Magalhaes finishes the round on his back.

Round 3
It’s more of the same in the last round: Means connecting with left hands while Magalhaes fails to get inside and bring the “Dirty Bird” to the ground. Magalhaes finally completes a takedown, but Means is only on the canvas for seconds before he scrambles back to his feet. Another rib-roaster fells Magalhaes; Means won’t follow him to the ground and motions for a standup with less than two minutes to go. Magalhaes grabs another single-leg and eats a series of hard, horizontal elbows to the temple. Magalhaes goes down and Means wants him back up. Magalhaes is slow to rise and ref Bo Nesslein asks him if he gives up. Magalhaes shakes his head no and clambers to his feet. Means keeps the pressure on and scores one more big knee to close out the fight.

Anton Kuivanen vs. Justin Salas
Round 1
Salas takes the outside in the southpaw stance while Kuivanen stands orthodox in the middle. Salas briefly shoots in for a single-leg, then wades back out and continues circling. He puts a right hook on Kuivanen’s chin and Kuivanen answers with a combo. Kuivanen has a body kick blocked but follows through with a right hand. Salas shoots again and Kuivanen slips the single. The Finn puts a one-two on Salas and the wrestler plows Kuivanen to the ground with a double-leg. Salas stands and looks to pass, kicking at and trying to control Kuivanen’s legs. Salas gets pushed to the ground and Kuivanen uses the opportunity to scramble up. Kuivanen counters a low kick with a hard right straight and goes back to chasing Salas down. Kuivanen lands a couple solid body kicks but gets rushed to the ground again right before the horn.

Round 2
Salas lands a right hook and Kuivanen replies in turn. Jumping knee misses for Salas and he moves in behind it to press Kuivanen into the fence. Kuivanen quickly shoves him off and denies the next clinch. Kuivanen hits a slow low kick and Salas comes over the top with a right straight, then a right hook. Salas tries another single-leg and winds up holding Kuivanen on the fence again. He trips Kuivanen down briefly, but the Finn pops right back up and thuds another kick to the American’s midsection. Salas connects with a short right hook to the bloodied nose of Kuivanen, comes forward with a three-piece to the body and head. Another double-leg try from Salas yields another stalemate on the cage.

Round 3
Salas scores with a body kick of his own and comes in soon after to take down Kuivanen at the base of the fence. He stacks up and looks to pass, and Kuivanen grabs for a leglock underneath. Salas spins out of it and lands in Kuivanen’s half-guard before standing and lobbing single punches to Kuivanen’s midsection. Kuivanen stands and Salas grabs a loose headlock, then lets it go and backs away with half a round to go. Kuivanen catches Salas in the cup with a kick but Salas wants to keep going. Salas pushes Kuivanen into the cage again and pops him with a level elbow before disengaging. Kuivanen lands a hard left but soon finds himself on his back again with less than a minute remaining. Kuivanen gets back to his feet before the horn, but that’s where it ends.

Official result: It’s a unanimous decision with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 for the winner, Justin Salas.

Jonathan Brookins vs. Vagner Rocha
Round 1
The southpaw Brookins lines up and takes a right from Rocha, then catches a kick and answers with one of his own. Rocha puts a couple more punches on and they exchange leg kicks before Rocha puts a hard kick on Brookins’ body. They tie up briefly and it’s the larger Brookins finding punches on the inside. Rocha tries to trip Brookins to the floor, but Brookins overpowers him and puts Rocha on his back. Brookins puts three or four short right hands on Rocha’s chin before finding the leverage to throw harder shots. One finds Rocha’s button and he goes out cold, eating a couple more shots before referee Dan Miragliotta can jump in. Jonathan Brookins gets the knockout at 92 seconds of the first round.

Ivan Menjivar vs. John Albert
Round 1
Menjivar comes out swinging big overhand rights and gets backed off by hooks from Albert, who steps in and drives a knee to the midsection. They tie up after a spinning back-fist attempt from Menjivar and Menjivar trips his man to the floor. Albert throws up a triangle and catches an omoplata, but Menjivar stacks him up and thumps him with five or six solid hammerfists. Albert throws up another triangle and gets an armbar this time, but Menjivar extracts himself again. Now it’s a leglock battle with Menjivar holding a standing ankle lock and Albert going for a heel hook. They scramble and Menjivar catches Albert turtling, booting him with a soccer kick to the body. Albert dazes Menjivar with a head kick and Albert rushes to finish. Albert’s throwing the kitchen sink at the “Pride of El Salvador,” vicious punches and knees, one of which may have caught Menjivar while kneeling. Menjivar survives the onslaught and winds up on top scoring ground-and-pound of his own. Albert turns over and Menjivar slaps on a rear-naked choke. It’s sunk in deep and Albert has no choice but to tap out at the 3:45 mark. Ivan Menjivar gets the comeback win in an early “Round of the Year” candidate.

T.J. Dillashaw vs. Walel Watson
Round 1
Dillashaw lunges at Watson with a wild punch and immediately goes after a shot. After some struggling on the fence, the Team Alpha Male product slams Watson down. Watson pops up and goes for another ride, and Dillashaw winds up in the lanky bantamweight’s open guard. Dillashaw postures up, smacks Watson with a right hand and then jumps on to Watson’s back, locking up a body triangle. Dillashaw softens him up with punches and tries a rear-naked choke, but Watson defends from his belly. Watson sits up but Dillashaw gets right back on and sinks in another RNC. Watson rolls over and Dillashaw lands in full mount with two minutes to go. Dillashaw flattens Watson out, controlling the posture and making he stays on top. Watson is just surviving, rolling from side to side as Dillashaw batters him. Referee Dan Miragliotta hovers nearby but lets the beating continue, and Watson will see round two.

Round 2
Dillashaw lands a big right hand off the jump and has Watson on his back again moments later. Watson keeps his legs moving as the wrestler tries to stack him up away from the cage. Dillashaw eventually winds up in Watson’s deep half-guard, socking him with left hands and elbows. Watson keeps trying to shrimp, squirm and push Dillashaw away, but Dillashaw is doing well to maintain top position. Now it’s full mount again for Dillashaw, with Watson just covering up as Dillashaw brutalizes him with left after left. Watson gets to his knees with Dillashaw still on his back and Dillashaw goes for the RNC again. It’s not fully under Watson’s chin and he escapes once again, but Dillashaw remains in full mount with 90 seconds left. Dillashaw giftwraps Watson’s arm and punches him in the face, causing him to turn over again. Another RNC try fails, so Dillashaw goes back to thumping Watson with hard ground-and-pound for the remainder of the frame.

Round 3
Watson opens up the last stanza with a flying knee that misses. Dillashaw wades into the pocket and drills Watson with some hard shots. The next time he comes in, he latches onto a single-leg and drags Watson to the floor. Watson manages to scramble back up this time and they resume trading with 3:30 left in the fight. Dillashaw walks right into a flurry from Watson and tags him with an uppercut, a hook. Dillashaw is on a takedown so Watson jumps up with a flying triangle. It looks deep at first, but Dillashaw sits down and extracts himself. Watson switches to an armbar, loses it and grabs at a leglock when Dillashaw gets on top. Dillashaw is posted with both arms, trying to yank his leg away, and he does. With 80 seconds left, Dillashaw is back in Watson’s closed guard, sitting up to drop more left hands. Watson swings up for an armbar, gets denied and winds up on his stomach with Dillashaw sinking one hook in on his back. Dillashaw puts his back to the fence and slaps on another RNC. Watson doesn’t seem concerned as he waits the choke out, but once Dillashaw gives up on RNC, he’s back in full mount, finishing the fight with cracking elbows.

Official result: All three judges submit lopsided scorecards -- 30-25, 30-25 and 30-26 -- in favor of the winner by unanimous decision, T.J. Dillashaw.

Philip De Fries vs. Stipe Miocic
Round 1
De Fries is swinging big in the early goings and a few of his wide punches find the head of Miocic. He keeps the pressure on, but Miocic stays with it and pushes forward with some major power of his own. A short right straight stuns De Fries and he stumbles backward. Miocic gives chase with more big rights and De Fries flops to his belly at the base of the fence. Ref Dan Miragliotta jumps in to rescue the prone Englishman after 43 seconds.

Aaron Simpson vs. Ronny Markes
Round 1
Simpson gets in the first solid strike with a punch to the body, but Markes rushes him with a flurry of shots and pins him against the cage. They stall out with over-unders and referee Jim Axtell breaks them up with 3:30 left in the round. Markes chops with a couple inside leg kicks; Simpson gives one back on the outside. Markes gets the better of an exchange in the pocket and Simpson staggers backward, eating a couple hard leg kicks. Simpson blasts Markes with an uppercut and the Brazilian is in trouble, trying to establish his guard as Simpson goes wild with ground-and-pound. Markes throws up an armbar but Simpson just stands and punches Markes’ face until he gives it up. Simpson stands over his foe for a moment before telling the ref he wants Markes up. They tie up and Simpson ends the round working Markes on the fence.

Round 2
Simpson scores with a right and Markes gives him some more leg kicks. The wrestler gets inside on Markes and gets off a few body shots against the cage before he breaks loose. Markes lands another leg kick, a close-quarters left hand, and Simpson decides to close the gap again. Markes shoves him away after a couple seconds and Simpson just misses with a slow head kick. It’s a rear waistlock for Simpson now as he tries to drag Markes to the floor. Markes gets the outside position on the fence with an underhook and throws a couple knees to Simpson’s body. They go back and forth, Markes tagging Simpson with an inside elbow before tripping him down. Markes is in side control on Simpson’s right with Simpson’s legs just out of range of the fence. The Omaha crowd jeers as the action slows further with a minute to go. Markes drops a couple elbows as Simpson shrimps and works to his feet. A single-leg attempt from Markes yields nothing so he goes back to holding Simpson on the fence, throwing knees inside to the horn.

Round 3
The middleweights tie up briefly until Markes breaks off to throw some leg kicks. Simpson is looking for the uppercut that landed in the first round, but Markes seems hip to it now as he tries back his man off with long punches. Simpson clinches and they jockey for position on the fence, Markes pestering with foot stomps. Ref Axtell breaks them up and Simpson comes inside with a pair of punches to the body. Markes replies with a right hand and another leg kick. Markes charges through a push kick from Simpson and bullies him into the fence again. Markes gives some more foot stomps as the ref calls for action. They’re restarted with 90 seconds left and Simpson rushes with aggressive punches. A right hand lands clean and Markes answers with a knee, then snuffs out a shot. Simpson comes forward with a wild strike and gets caught slipping, allowing Markes to take his back standing. Simpson lands a couple elbows before Markes adjusts his head, but Markes keeps the position and drags Simpson down on the fence. Simpson posts and stands with 10 seconds left and they finish there.

Official result: One judge scores the bout 29-28 Markes, while a second has it 29-28 Simpson. The final judge scores the bout 29-28 for the winner by split decision, Ronny Markes.

Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman
Round 1
The big men feel it out early, Herman trying to get inside with punches and leg kicks while Struve goes up top with a head kick. Herman digs a punch to the body and steps out of the way of a Struve combo. Struve’s back is to the fence and Herman steps inside to sock him with a pair of straights. Another combo and a leg kick land for Herman. A leaping kick from Herman misses and the crowd “oohs” at the attempt on the larger man. Herman backs Struve away with a straight right, waits out of range and slaps with a leg kick. Herman keeps his space, pushing Struve off with front kicks. Struve grins after Herman comes inside to punch. Herman catches a body kick and grazes with a straight right, finishing off with some more outside leg kicks.

Round 2
Struve gets a takedown and lands in full mount on Herman, but Herman muscles his way out and scrambles to his feet, where he goes back to leg-kicking and inching away from Struve’s strikes. Struve puts some punches in his man’s face and lands a hard leg kick, but Herman comes back with a combo that includes a solid uppercut. Struve throws more leg kicks as he pushes forward and decks Herman with a right hand that has the American circling out. Herman’s cut under his right eye as he’s chased around the cage. Finally, Struve gets right next to Herman and drops him with a combo. Struve waits for his chance and steps into full mount, and this time Herman’s not going anyway. Struve unloads with lefts and rights on the squirming Herman until referee Josh Rosenthal waves it off. Herman isn’t happy with the stoppage, but Struve had him pinned and he was helpless stop the barrage. Stefan Struve gets the TKO victory at 3:52 of round two.

Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez
Round 1
Sanchez takes the outside, looking for leg kicks and tense jabs while Ellenberger waits and swings high. Now the “Dream” moves to the center and shakes out his hands while Ellenberger stands out of range. They’re not really engaging through the first 90 seconds, but Sanchez stays inside too long and catches a couple punches. Sanchez stomps and feints, trying to find his range. Ellenberger throws a combo but doesn’t have the distance down yet either. Ellenberger counters a Sanchez punch with a hook and a knee. Sanchez rushes Ellenberger on the fence and scores with a punch, but he takes another knee from the Nebraskan. Sanchez rushes and scores with a punch, but Ellenberger ducks the next one, gets inside and lands a knee before circling out. Ellenberger catches Sanchez coming forward and drops him with a counter right. Sanchez pops back up and tries to put Ellenberger on the fence, but Ellenberger reverses and drills him with a few more knees. A right hand at the horn rocks Sanchez and he’s cut on the bridge of his nose as he sits down in his corner.

Round 2
The welterweights are stalking again, Ellenberger waiting to counter as Sanchez tries to kick at his body and legs. A spinning kick grazes Ellenberger’s body and replies with two hard right hooks. A left hand shakes Sanchez’s head; the Greg Jackson student is having serious trouble finding Ellenberger on the feet. Ellenberger seems content to wait and slug Sanchez when he tries to come in. Sanchez lands a right in the next flurry and takes one back. Ellenberger steps in and shoves Sanchez away; Sanchez replies by rushing forward with a wide right. Sanchez gets caught throwing a wild left as Ellenberger changes levels for an easy double-leg. Closing up his guard, Sanchez lands a few palm strikes before swinging his legs up for an armbar. He gives it up quickly, waits and tries again, but gets nothing with Ellenberger staying heavy on top. Ellenberger lands a cracking elbow and then another, closing the round with some ground-and-pound that has the hometown crowd roaring.

Round 3
Sanchez charges forward to start the last stanza, but it’s more of the same with Ellenberger picking his shots on his wild opponent. Ellenberger is mixing in the jab at range now and going up top with his right when Sanchez comes in to trade. One hard right bounces off Sanchez’s temple, but Sanchez keeps coming and lands one of his own. Ellenberger grabs a single-leg and quickly gives up. He comes and drives a knee in the clinch, goes for another shot but Sanchez isn’t having it. Ellenberger is bloodied around the nose and mouth now as Sanchez walks him down along the fence. Sanchez rushes in and Ellenberger hits another takedown at the base of the cage with 90 seconds left. Sanchez scrambles to his knees and Ellenberger tries to secure his back, but he botches it and slips off. Sanchez sinks a hook in and slugs away with hard left hands as Ellenberger tries to work back up from his knees. It’s a bad spot for Ellenberger but he escapes out the back door with seconds to go and manages to finish the fight on his feet, putting a few last punches on Sanchez.
