Bellator 49 Results and Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com will report from Caesars Atlantic City in Atlantic City, N.J., at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET with play-by-play and live results of Bellator 49, which features the quarterfinals of Bellator's Season 5 welterweight tournament.

Azunna Anyanwu vs. J.A. Dudley

Round 1
The two heavyweights clinch against the cage. Anyanwu lands shots to the body of his opponent as he works for a body lock. The action picks up and Dudley drops for a single leg. The hulking 265-pounder presses down on Anyanwu from half guard. Dudley postures up and lands shots on the body. The action slows, and referee Donnie Carolei stands them up. The two exchange blows quickly as Anyanwu seems to be the faster man, actually landing his punches. He grabs ahold of Dudley's neck, and looks for a guillotine. Unsuccessful, he throws Dudley on the mat and drops into side control. The round ends as he attempts a keylock.

Round 2
Keith Mills

Anyanwu outslugged Dudley.
Anyanwu is immediately the aggressor as he lands bombs on his opponent with both hands. Dudley presses him against the cage in retaliation. The two break and take the center of the cage. Dudley throws a low kick and lands a jab to follow. Anyanwu drops for a double-leg takedown, but his foe fends him off. Time is called by referee Donnie Carolei to check a cut above Anyanwu's eye. The doctor quickly clears him, and we are fighting again. Anyanwu lands two straight rights, hurting Dudley and prompting a clinch. Dudley lands an uppercut as the two break. Anyanywu lands three straight haymakers and staggers his foe. He follows up on the ground and Dudley goes fetal. Carolei steps in to halt the fight, giving Anyanwu the second-round stoppage at 4:16.

James Jones vs. Lester Caslow

Round 1
K. Mills

Caslow stopped Jones.
The purple-haired Caslow opens the bout with a big high kick but is taken down for his troubles. "Binky" Jones moves to half guard and works to pass further. Caslow lands strikes on the head and body from the bottom of his guard. Jones moves for a kimura from half guard; Caslow will not let him pass to side control, however. Jones puts the arm behind his back momentarily. Caslow smartly sweeps and winds up in side control. He lands knees and short elbows on his foe from the top. Jones holds on, but Caslow postures up for more elbows on the ground. He continues to work his short elbows as the round ends.

Round 2
Jones swings for the fences to open the round, but Caslow comes back with right hand of his own. It doesn't land clean, but Jones steps away from the punch, and appears to tweak his right knee.

Caslow pounces, following up with strikes and referee Gasper Oliver stops the bout just 15 seconds into the second round.

Brylan van Artsdalen vs. Joel Roberts

Round 1
The two welterweights meet at the center of the cage. Roberts lands a body kick and Van Artsdalen takes him to the ground slickly. Roberts grabs an arm but his opponent pulls out and they reset. Van Artsdalen lands a brutal knee to the groin and his foe crumbles in pain. After the break, Van Artsdalen lands two uppercuts and presses Roberts against the cage. The strength advantage is apparent here, as he simply ragdolls Roberts. Knees to the body are thrown by both men. Neither men are able to move as they exchange more knees. They break and Van Artsdalen lands a series of hooks. He trips his opponent for a second but he immediately gets up. Van Artsdalen hops on Roberts' back but is bucked off soon after. Big punches are landed by both men and a sudden Roberts left lands hard and Van Artsdalen is staggered. Roberts locks a guillotine and pulls guard quickly. He tries to roll to full mount with the choke, but Van Artsdalen defends and frees his neck at the bell to end a thrilling transition.

Round 2
K. Mills

Roberts submitted Van Artsdalen.
Van Artsdalen again uses his clinch work, pressing his foe against the cage to start the round. Roberts frees himself and lands a few clean punches. Van Artsdalen has had enough and slams him to the ground. Roberts grabs an arm, but to no avail. Van Artsdalen postures up, and as he attacks into the guard, Roberts lands a big upkick that staggers his foe. A la Joe Riggs-Ivan Salaverry, Roberts wraps his legs around the neck of Van Artsdalen and tightens a triangle choke. He sucks Van Arsdalen to the mat, and extends his arm, but his foe is out cold. The fight ends via technical submission at 1:47 of the second round.

Giedrius Karavackas vs. LeVon Maynard

Round 1
Both men exchanging strikes early, but neither landing clean. Karavackas continues to jump into the clinch, landing short uppercuts and knees. The Lithuanian judoka gets underhooks and trips Maynard to the mat and into side control, but his foe smoothly snakes back up and regains his feet. Maynard landing heavier leather on the feet, so Karavackas moves inside where he lands another salvo of punches and uppercuts. Maynard composes himself, and attacks with a right hand. The right hook floors Karavackas, and Maynard is all over him with follow-up shots. Karavackas recovers, but Maynard moves to full mount. However, Karavackas bridges and escapes with under a minute to fight. A left hand and two kicks land for Karavackas before the bell.

Round 2
K. Mills

Karavackas flattened Maynard.
A Maynard jab is countered by Karavackas, who follows with two kicks and bulls into the clinch. Maynard circles off the fence and they resume boxing in the middle of the cage. A head kick by Maynard whizzes high. A body kick from Karavackas prompts a powerful takedown from Maynard, who sets up shop along the fence. Maynard chips away with shots to the body, but can't pass half guard. Karavackas regains his feet. Maynard comes over the top with a left and Karavackas returns fire with a body kick. Karavackas lands a right high kick and clinches to land two knees to the body. Maynard lands a left hook followed by a right hook and the round ends.

Round 3
Karavackas comes forward with a front kick that lands. The two clinch and exchange hooks. The Lithuanian clinches and lands his knees to the body. They break and Karavackas lands two body shots. Maynard shoots as Karavackas throws another kick, shooting right into a major knee. Maynard goes down fast first, and Karavackas jumps on him, boxing his ears while Maynard is helpless on his knees until Donnie Carolei rescues him, 92 seconds into the final round.

Scott Heckman vs. Alexandre "Popo" Bezerra

Round 1
The catchweight fight of 147 pounds begins as the two touch gloves. They stay at distance gauging sizing each other up. "Popo" throws a front kick which lands square to the chest. Heckman shoots for a double leg and gets it but Popo is immediately on his knees. Popo shoots to his feet and the two are at distance again. Heckman counters a knee with a nice uppercut that lands. Heckman throws a left hook and shoots for a double-leg, but Popo is back to his feet. Popo barely misses with a right high kick. Popo throws two consecutive leg kicks to the knee of his foe. Another kick to the same leg hurts Heckman. He shoots in retaliation but Popo is already to his feet. The round ends as Heckman throws a hook against the cage.

Bezerra unloaded on Heckman.
Round 2
Heckman immediately shoots but is shrugged off by Bezerra. Popo lands another big kick to the left leg of Heckman and his movement is clearly labored now. Heckman shoots again but Bezerra slips out. The Brazilian has had enough, and shoots for his own takedown, lifting his foe above the cage and slamming him to the ground. He scrambles to take the back and starts landing blows with pace and power. Heckman flattens out and referee Gasper Oliver ends the bout at 1:38 of the second round. Dominant finish by "Popo" Bezerra.

Steve Carl vs. Douglas Lima


Round 1
Carl circles to his right trying to find his range. Lima snaps a leg kick. Carl cracks an overhand right that staggers Lima who falls to the ground in a heap. Lima grabs for a leg frantically and reverses into full guard. Carl throws one leg over for a triangle but is not in position, and Lima wriggles out. Lima stands up out of guard and the two are standing. Lima snaps off a high kick that is blocked. Lima paws with the jab and fires a right straight that misses. Lima trips Carl and moves into side control. Carl slips out and eats a kick to the leg as he stands up. Lima snaps a body kick to the liver. The two circle and Carl dives under for a takedown as the round ends.

Round 2
K. Mills

Lima decisioned Carl.
Lima stalks his foe, but has a leg kick caught, and he is taken down. Carl wraps his legs for a leglock but Lima slips out and is now on top in full guard. He quickly passes to half as Carl just hangs on. Lima loses half and is back in the full guard of Carl. Carl lands shots from the bottom and Lima's offense is stifled. Lima backs out and lands a straight right. Lima is visibly winded and Carl is still fresh. A jab lands for Lima followed by an uppercut. Carl shoots for a lazy takedown, bails on the takedown and sucks Lima into his guard. He works for a kimura from the bottom. Lima steps over his head and is standing. He postures up and falls into side control. Lima again postures up and drops a big bomb on Carl. In half guard, Carl again works for a kimura from the bottom. Lima finishes the round in half guard, landing small punches.

Round 3
Lima cracks his foe with a counter left. Lima works his wicked leg kicks again and nails the shin of Carl. Lima takes the fight to the floor, and so he does so, landing in half guard. Lima hops into side control. Carl works his kimura again trying to reverse Lima. Lima elbows him in the liver for his troubles and he loses his grip. Lima finally moves into full mount and begins nailing Carl with punches. Carl bucks and gives up his back but immediately reverses, and is on top in full guard. He postures up and starts landing blows on his foe. He drops into half guard and presses Lima against the cage. The fight ends as Lima works his arm under the leg for a sweep.

Official result: Judge Cardo Urso and Jeff Blatnick see it 30-27, while Ricardo Almeida has it 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, and now advancing to the semifinals of Bellator's Season 5 tournament, Douglas Lima.

Luis "Sapo" Santos vs. Dan Hornbuckle


Round 1
Hornbuckle paws with the jab to start the fight. Santos fires a leg kick which "The Handler" returns in spades. Santos ducks under for an uppercut. "Sapo" is working his kicks both to the head and legs. Sapo ducks under a hook and lands a right hook of his own. A switch kick is blocked by Hornbuckle. Three jabs follow from Hornbuckle but none land. Hornbuckle cracks his opponent with a left hook. Hornbuckle is turning up the pace, stalking his foe. The crowd reacts to a big kick and Santos takes his foe to the ground. Sapo stands up and allows Hornbuckle to do the same. Santos again attacks the leg to solid effect. The bell tolls as a combo from Hornbuckle misses.

Round 2

Santos outpointed Hornbuckle.
"The Handler" opens the round jabbing, but missing. Santos fires a head kick that is blocked. Hornbuckle launches one of his own but it is blocked. Santos punishes the left leg of Hornbuckle once more. Santos dives for a double-leg and brings the fight to the ground. Hornbuckle ties him up and referee Gasper Oliver stands them up without much incident. Another switch kick from Santos is blocked. The two circle continually as Hornbuckle goes in for a combo. Santos returns fire with a head kick. A head kick is blocked by Sapo but Hornbuckle is turning up the pace. Sapo presses his foe against the cage and has a hold of a leg. The round ends with the two clinched along the fence.

Round 3
Hornbuckle is the aggressor early as he presses the action with long punches. Sapo trips on a kick, but "The Handler" remains standing. Sapo flies from the bottom and lands a kick and stands up to clinch. He drops into his foe's full guard. Hornbuckle moves into rubber guard in order to tie up his opponent. Santos slips out and lands a few blows to the face. Santos is unable to mount any offense and referee Gasper Oliver stands the two up. Sapo attacks the leg once more as Hornbuckle backs him up with punches. The two stand at distance as the crowd begins to boo as they size the action up. Santos lands a big head kick that brings the crowd back to life and pushes Hornbuckle against the cage at the final bell.

Official result: All three judges -- Ricardo Almeida, Jeff Blatnick and Romulo Bittencourt -- score the fight for the winner by unanimous decision, and advancing to the tournament semifinals, Luis "Sapo" Santos.

Bellator Welterweight Tournament Quarterfinal
Ben Saunders vs. Chris Cisneros


Round 1
The two touch gloves and Saunders lands two kicks quickly and presses his foe against the cage. He lands a knee in the clinch but Cisneros reverses. Saunders throws him to the mat with gusto and works into side control. Saunders works for an arm triangle and hops into mount. He leans to his right and begins landing left hands to the face. Cisneros gives up his back and Saunders lands more left hands. Cisneros is stuck against the cage and Saunders gets a hook in. He continues to batter him with his left hand but Cisneros wriggles out and goes for a single-leg. Saunders reverses his efforts and moves into half guard. Cisneros again escapes and goes for a guillotine but "Killa B" bucks him off. Cisneros moves into full guard and pulls out as Saunders goes for a triangle. Saunders jumps from the ground and lands a kick on Cisneros. Saunders locks in a triangle and bangs away on the Hawaiian's head, but can't finish before the bell.

Round 2

Saunders blasted Cisneros in the final round.
Cisneros attempts to throw Saunders to the ground but Saunders moves into side control from the scramble. Saunders wraps his arms for a straight armlock but Cisneros escapes. Cisneros bucks and the two end up in north-south position. Saunders again moves into side control and looks for the straight armbar. Saunders lands big knees to the liver of his foe. Saunders looks for the crucifix position as he continues to batter his opponent with left hands. He traps the arm but isn't in good position to punch so he works towards a kimura instead. Saunders keeps working from side control and lands a few big right hands. He steps over for an armbar attempt but the round ends. Another dominant grappling
display by Saunders.

Round 3
Saunders opens the round throwing punches and Cisneros clinches. Saunders lands a nasty knee to the liver and Cisneros crumbles in pain. A few follow up punches from the top are all she wrote and referee Keith Peterson stops the bout. Ben Saunders takes the third-round knockout at 29 seconds of the finale frame.

Chris Lozano vs. Brent Weedman


Round 1
Both men trade blows and Weedman staggers Lozano with a right. Weedman grabs a hold of his foe and violently throws him to the floor. Lozano gets up but Weedman has his back. Weedman drops down and is pressed against the cage by Lozano. Lozano throws Weedman to the floor and Weedman stands back up immediately. The two meet again at the center of the cage. Weedman clinches his foe against the cage and brings him down. Lozano turtles and Weedman gets him back on the floor and threatens to take his back. Lozano powers from turtle position but Weedman holds on, getting both hooks in. Lozano gets to his knees with Weedman riding his back. His weight is too much and Lozano drops to the floor. Weedman is too high for a choke and Lonzano survives to his knees. Lozano turns Weedman into the cage as the bell sounds.

Round 2

Lozano advanced to the semifinals.
A Lozano combo to the body and head of Weedman hurts him. He goes for a takedown bu Lozano sprawls. They clinch and Lozano lands two brutal punches that hurt his foe. Weedman is visibly wobbling around the cage. Lozano lands an uppercut and then a right hand, snapping Weedman's head back. A jab lands for Lozano and then another uppercut. Weedman is showing off an impressive beard. Another left for the Ohioan. Two jabs land for Weedman. Weedman now is pressing the action landing leg kicks. A combo lands for Lozano. Weedman responds with a knee and clinches against the cage. He drops for a single-leg at the bell.

Round 3
Weedman comes out jabbing. Lozano catches a kick and pushes Weedman against the cage. He attempts two spinning back kicks, but the second one is caught. Weedman gains top control from the scramble but Lozano squirms out of it. Lozano moves to his feet and trips Weedman, gaining side control. He begins pounding the liver of Weedman, and while moving to mount, he straightens the arm of his foe. Weedman shrimps to half guard but Lozano is landing bombs on his body. Lozano twists the arm for a keylock and puts his weight into it. Weedman gets free but Lozano takes his back. Weedman works himself out of it and drags his opponent to the ground. Through the scramble, Lozano ends up on top in half guard. Weedman keeps fighting as the two clinch and stand up. Weedman drags his opponent to the ground and the final bell tolls, ending a fantastic fight.
