Sherdog Remembers: ‘Stun Gun’ Spinning Stuff

Jeff VillanuevaMar 01, 2018

On this day four years ago, March 1, 2014, the main event of “The Ultimate Fighter China Finale” featured an incredible knockout by Dong Hyun Kim against John Hathaway.

Hathaway has not fought since.

Here’s how Sherdog.com editor Brian Knapp documented the moment in his deadline recap four years ago:

The conservative Dong Hyun Kim the MMA world once knew seems to be long gone.

Kim knocked out John Hathaway with an exquisite spinning back elbow in the third round of their UFC Fight Night 37 main event on Saturday at the Cotai Arena in Macau, China. Hathaway (17-2, 7-2 UFC) met his end 62 seconds into round three, as he was finished for the first time as a professional.

The “Stun Gun” was the aggressor from the start. He wobbled Hathaway with a right hand inside the first 30 seconds and later floored him with a left before swarming with standing-to-ground punches. After controlling round two with a takedown and some ground-and-pound, Kim found the finish he was seeking. The 32-year-old South Korean judoka countered a standing elbow from Hathaway with a perfectly timed spinning attack that rendered the London Shootfighters export unconscious and brought the match to a decisive close.

Kim (19-2-1, 10-2 UFC) has rattled off four wins in a row, stopping his last two opponents in spectacular fashion.

“I cannot tell you how happy I am,” he said. “I think I draw from all the energy of the Korean and Asian fans. There is no stopping. I’m going to continue going forward. I don’t care who my next opponent will be. I want to get a shot at the title.”
