WASHINGTON D.C., May 12 -- It was a historic night in the Nation's Capital as an estimated 2,500 fans crowded the DC Armory to witness the District's first mixed martial arts event: "Mixed Martial Arts Championship: The Revolution."
PRIDE veteran Antonio Schembri (Pictures) made short work of Amir Rahnavardi (Pictures) in the co-main event, submitting the Muay Thai specialist in less than a minute with an armbar and triangle choke combination.
Nineteen-year-old Chris Manuel of American Top Team kept his record unblemished, defeating a game and flashy Khomkrit Niimi, of the Lion's Den, by referee stoppage due to strikes.
A scary moment arose in the seventh fight of the evening, as Jose Edson Franca and Rocky Batastini (Pictures) went tumbling through the ropes on a takedown attempt. Batastini rolled over the apron, crashed into a scorer's table, and then landed on the concrete. Visibly shaken, Batastini was eventually able to continue, though he lost by decision after three rounds.
